It has been 4 months since I first noticed Connor staring at me in Church. Jacob and I have grown a little closer. I eat dinner with him and his dad at least once a week on the ranch. He picks me up every day for school and drops me off. I quiz him for his upcoming tests. We make out a lot. We haven't had sex again, I've been a little too nervous to give it another go. But we still fool around a lot though.
"Connor. Cut it out. Please!" I plead.
"Stay out of this Brie! This is between your trust-fund-gone-wrong boyfriend and me..." yells Connor.
"Church boy, what the hell have I even done to you? Is it cause Brie likes me better than you? Huh? She isn't into pricks like you, though I'd say it's generous to say you even have one"
"Shut up Jacob!" I yell "You are only making this worse. Please stop, both of you! You are causing a scene. Everyone at school is staring at you!". It was true, everyone in the school was circled around them in the parking lot. Jacob and Connor were circling each other, fists out, teeth bared, and insults flying.
I don't really know what set them off this time. Last time it was Jacob provoking Connor and the time before was the opposite. Each of their bad excuses for the fighting did nothing to veil their real reason for fighting; me. Typically, they swing a few punches, work out their anger and hate for each other, draw a little blood, and part ways. Today is the same as always.
"Jacob, babe? You okay? Promise me you'll just walk away in the future. Please hon" I say as I affectionately nudge his arm. He grabs a cloth out of his car, starting to wipe off some of the blood from his bleeding nose.
"You don't know anything Brie" is all he says, sullen that Connor got in a few better punches than he did. Well, there was always tomorrow.
I switch between comforting each of them first. Last time it was Connor, now it is Jacob's turn though he never uses the time very well in comparison to Connor, who likes to spend every second talking with me. So, I leave and walk over to Connor.
"Hey, Con. You okay? You got in some pretty bad blows, huh? Promise me you will stop trying to provoke it" I see him move his mouth in protest "Yeah, I know, it's not always your fault, but its a two lane road. Be the bigger person, because Jacob sure isn't going to be"
"Why do you like him then, Brie?". He asked, his eyes sincerely wanting to know why I continued to pick someone who didn't seem like a match for me from the outside.
"I don't know. I just do. It's a draw we have to each other. And, Connor, if Jacob and I ever break up, it's not going to have anything to do with one of these stupid fights, so you might as well just stop getting into them in the first place." I give him a light kiss on the bruise on his cheekbone, and turn away. He grabs my wrist.
"Brie... If something was to happen to Jacob, then would you love me?"
"Connor, I already do love you. Like a friend. Nothing will change that. I'm sorry" and I walked away, replaying what he had said to me, thinking about whether he meant to sound as bad as he had.
That was 4 days from when Jacob disappeared.
