"It Was Never Rantaro"

Shuichi sighed softly to himself. It had been a really rough week of school for him.
He had tons of projects to finish, tons of assignments to do and more importantly...His best friend to watch over. Latley he had noticed his best friend "Kaede Akamatsu" spending a lot of quality time with his fellow classmate Rantaro, It almost happened out of the blue. Shuichi and her scheduled days of meeting up after class and him walking her home came to a halt after Rantaro and her started to walk together. He almost felt abandoned in a way, Kaede was too busy anytime he asked her if they wanted to study, She would give him the new classic; "Oh me and Rantaro already made plans! I'm sorry Shuichi maybe next time!"
He sighed to himself as he looked down at his phone refreshing the screen multiple times hoping to hear a little ding indicating that Kaede had sent him a new message, But nothing. Shuichi wasn't gonna lie to himself, he was most definitely in love with his best friend. But of course he wouldn't tell Kaede that!
"Still nothing..cmon Kaede please..just a hello..."
His head dropped low as he began to walk home not saying much after, It was almost like his heart had been shattered into a million pieces. He could feel his whole body shut down and he knew that it was too, Every time he saw Kaede with Rantaro it almost struck a deep spot in his heart that couldn't be repaired.
Shuichi unlocked the door to his apartment and tossed his bag aside quickly falling onto his bed, "Not today" he thought, There was no way he had enough motivation to finish any schoolwork. All he wanted to do was turn off all the lights and lay in quiet ambiance as he drifted into a deep sleep forgetting the days worries.

Kaede held her books tightly to her chest looking down as she waited for Rantaro. In a way she almost felt guilt for turning down Shuichi every time he wanted to go out someplace with her, It really hurt her heart...But there was nobody better she could get advice from on how to confess to her long time crush; "Shuichi Saihara" well, Her Best Friend.
Kaede looked up to see Rantaro walking down the hall as he looked around for Kaede, Upon seeing her he gave a small "Aha" and walked over.
"So Kaede hows everything holding up?"
Rantaro leaned against a nearby locker and reaching into his back pocket to take out a small gum pack, Wintergreen.
"I don't know...I don't really think that good since Shuichi just hasn't been acting himself..."
Rantaro raised an eyebrow to her and began unwrapping his gum and plopping it into his mouth closing and putting the rest away .
"Ah do tell..."
Kaede let out a sigh and looked to the side.
"I mean...He's been asking me to hang out, But I haven't been saying yes..Which is on me! But..He just, His tone..His body language...It happned when we started to hang out.."
Rantaro nodded with each word.
"Ah..I see now.."
Kaede looked back to him curiously.
"Hm...how so...?"
He smiled a little and put a hand over his heart "Well..seems to me that his heart is doing the talking for him, If you get what I'm getting at."
Kaedes eyes went wide as she gasped softly.
"Oh! H-he's, Jealous?!"
Rantaro nodded in response.
"Yeah, either that or he's just really depressed that you two haven't been chilling."
He shrugged softly and pulled out his phone to check the time; 5:40pm. All the late buses should be leaving by now.
"Well Kaede...I think it's time! I think you should go on over to him and tell him how you really feel."
Rantaro smiles putting a hand on her shoulder and shook it a little
"You got this! Just remeber the stuff we have been talking about for the past week!"
Kaede gave a thumbs up and a smile.
"Yeah! Got it!"
Rantaro began to walk away until he turned nodding and signaled Kaede to catch something, she quickly put down her books and held out her hands.
Rantaro softly tossed what it was as she swiftly caught what was thrown, A piece of gum.
As Kaede looked up to say thanks he was already gone.
"Hm..guess he moves fast."
She picked up her books, With a small and confident smile Kaede began
waking to where Shuichi's apartment was, Her heart full and head full of anxiety and excitement.

Shuichi was abruptly awoken when he heard his loud doorbell go off several times.
"Uhhhg...Coming coming..."
He rubbed his eyes a few times feeling the tears as he shook his head; Pathetic he thought. He sluggishly walked to the door slowly opening it only to be greeted with Kaede holding a bunch of books and her backpack still on her back.
"Hey! So sorry for coming without asking and an invite!"
She chuckled softly which caused Shuichi's heart to flutter. What was she doing here..Why was she here, It's been a week so why? 
"Hm..Oh, Well that's alright you can come on in"
Kaede smiles to him nodding a little and kicked off her shoes and placing her large stack of books on a small table. She dusted off her skirt and took a few deep sighs. Her eyes scanned the apartment, Not too bad. Her eyes then met his bed, the pillow had wet spots all over it, had he been crying...
Kaede looked up at him seeing he was looking right at her, he quickly averted his gaze when their eyes met, She could've swore she saw his eyes a shade of pink...So he had.
"I Just was wondering if we could grab a bite to eat and talk.." she cupped her hands looking down almost embarrassed.
She was alerted to look up when she saw Shuichi flip over the pillow, Did he notice her staring? He then walked to his small closet pulling out his hat. She knew he was now feeling insecure.
"Rantaro coming...I'm assuming"
There was almost poison in his words as he adjusted his hat looking away from her.
"Rantar-what?!"
She then looked up crossing her arms to be greeted with his back turned to her. She filled up her cheeks with air her cheeks as she muttered softly filling the empty void in the apartment.
"Guess he was right..."
He stopped hearing her words.
"What..."
Kaede shook her head softly and took out her phone looking down at it to call his number.
"Nothing... and he's not coming...unless you want h-"
She was cut off when in almost a swift movement he softly grabbed her wrist where she was holding her phone.
"N-no I'd prefer it just be us."
He could feel his heart beating quickly, he's never ever had this close contact to Kaede yet alone been this close in proximity besides hugging friendly hugging, What was he doing.
Shuichi was snapped back to the situation he was in as he watched her hand go limp her phone almost dropping in slow motion. And on the lock screen? Guilt, Pure Guilt.
It was a smiling selfie of him and Kaede when they went to the beach last month.
She was smiling brightly wearing her sundress and straw hat. As for him, he gave a small shy smile at the camera flashing a peace sign wearing his sunglasses on top of his head and his button up white silhouette shark shirt that was a navy blue. Kaede picked it out for him cause she thought it was "Cute" When he thought it was extremely tacky but wanted to make her happy and surprise her, And boy was she surprised, her face lit up like a kid at Christmas Day when she saw him wearing that tacky shirt. 
He looked up at Kaede to only to be greeted with tears. His chest knotted up to see her like this, he felt his lips curl into a shakey posture struggling to find the words.
"It was never Rantaro..."
He went stone faced and continued to listen;
"It was never him that I wanted!!! Never!! Why would I choose him when I already have what I want right here, Right Infront of me!"
Shuichi felt his eyes tearing up as he slowly let go of Kaedes wrist only to be met with her arms shaking around his neck, She didn't really need Rantaros advice at this point...She was doing what her heart felt was right, The week almost seeming like it went to waste.
"He was right...You are Jealous...which means, I can do this..."
She slowly leaned into Shuichis face her lips drawing near. He hesitated to see that she was waiting for him to lean into her but he happily obliged leaning into her to feel there lips meet. He could feel her tears on his face..He couldn't of been happier. They both seemed to pull away at the same time to meet each other's gaze as Kaede chuckled. "Let's go get some food.." Shuichi smiled no more words needing to be said about what occurred; They already knew.
As Kaede and Shuichi left they smiled holding hands Schichi leading, opening the door for her.
As the door closed Kaedes phone lit up the picture shining brightly on her phone screen.
