I shake my head and bite my lip.
Josh rolls his eyes. "You have to be braver than that, Chloe. I'll protect you." He shrugs.
"Are you saying there's something I need to be protected from? Josh you told me you'd never put me in danger!"
I hear panting, and I look around, only to see a small figure running towards Josh and me. My eyes widen and I back away. As soon as I see who it is, I sigh. Bridget. She's my next door neighbor with the most vibrant blue eyes you've ever seen. I look down at her. "Hi?"
She grins. "Hey!"
Josh stands there, not sure if he should be nice because she's a friend of mine, or creeped out because she was following us.
"So what're you guys doin'?" She asks, looking around.
I look at Josh. He clears his throat. "We.. are.. umm..talking a late night, early morning walk." He nods. I look at her. "Mhm." I join in.
"Is that all? Why were you guys taking a break here, in front of the old creepy factory?" She chuckles.
"Does it matter?" I snap.
She stops giggling and Josh shakes his head at me.
I look down.
"Your such an asshole and waste of space!" Laughter.
She sees the factory door open and gasps. "Oh my God! We should go inside." She says softly.
Josh nods and smiles at her. I roll my eyes.
"Or... we could go back to bed." I suggest. Bridget frowns as I begin to walk away, Midnight following reluctantly, constantly looking back as we walk. I look at her. "Do you really want to go there?"
Beep. Beep. Beep.
I can't hear anything other than the beeping. I run to Josh instinctively and wrap my arms around his neck, sobbing. I was terrified. I am terrified.
Extremely.
He rubs my back and calms me down and Bridget looks at me. She was short, so the only place she could hug was under my chest. Thank goodness she didn't.
I pull away when it stops. My eyes widen when Midnight runs in the factory. I run after her and Josh and Bridget follow quickly.
The door shuts when the wind blows.
I stand there in the darkness with my best friend, my new cat, and a nosy neighbor of mine.
In an abandoned factory.
Josh takes his phone out and puts the flashlight app on.
"MIDNIGHT!" I scream. I run up some stairs. Josh follows. I trip on a stair as I escalated. I feel a splintering on my ankle. A sharp pain. It sends me in shock for a second. Josh was right behind me, luckily, when I fell backwards. He wraps his arms around my waist and holds me to him for a second, making me feel safe.
"Chloe?!" Bridget looks at me, wide eyed.
I pant and feel the water in my eyes, the tears forcing their way out. A few tears stream down my cheeks, cutting the way through the dust on my cheeks that stuck on my skin from the abandoned factory. I look at my ankle. I couldn't see it very well. Josh picks me up bridal style and shines the light from his phone onto my ankle.
My ankle looked normal, but it was aching. Bridget looks between Josh and I with a smirk and I lightly blush, knowing what she was thinking. I punch his chest and he nods, putting me down.
I hear scratching.
"Is that Midnight?" Bridget listens to the scratching. I shrug and try to force my way up the stairs, knowing it hurt Josh to watch. I hear hissing.
Is that real, or is it all in my head?
We make our way up the stairs and I see the figure of a human. An old looking man.
"E-eh.. humans? DON'T COME CLOSE! WYATT. COME HERE. WITH THE GUN 'N SHIT." His breath was terrible. I hear footsteps and the sound of metal brushing. The lights flicker on and I see a teenage boy, with dirt all over his face, his dark brown eyes shining in the dim light, and messy black hair. He looks at us. "Pa, we're okay. They can't hurt us."
The old man groans and smacks Wyatt before walking away.
"Hello." Bridget was texting her boyfriend the whole time. I shake my head and wave. Josh plugs his nose. "Hello!"
But it sounds like "Hellurah!"
Wyatt smiles. "Why are you guys here?"
That question again?!
I shrug and before I can say anything, Wyatt's fingers around my wrist, Bridget's wrist too. Josh tries to pry me and Bridget away from him, but Wyatt begins sprinting down the hall. It got colder and colder the farther we went. Suddenly, Wyatt was pulling a staircase from the roof. We climb up the stairs and I gasp in pain. He sits and I look around. We were on the roof. Josh was the last one up. He grins, the moonlight shining on us. I look down at the city.
"Woah." I whisper, amazed.
