"Are you fucking serious?" Annabeth yelled.
"Uh, what?"
"I saw you making out with Luke, you bitch. First, you lie to me, but also, you're dating my dick of an ex who fucking cheated on me?" Thalia wasted no time. She narrowed her eyes, which made her stand out even more with the white background behind her. She was immediately on the defense.
"Oh, and what? As if you haven't been fucking my cousin when I specifically asked you not to?" Her voice level had gone up significantly, and Percy was sitting on the side, ready to jump at Annabeth's defense.
"Don't start with that bullshit!" she shouted. "Percy and I aren't together because I knew you wouldn't like it, but that didn't even matter because you were going around behind my back with fucking Luke!"
"So you did want to be with Percy," Thalia snapped back. Annabeth felt her face get red, but she refused to be flustered by that.
"Don't change the subject! You're the one-"
"No, Annabeth, you don't change the subject. You've been sneaking around with my cousin, for God's sake!"
"I haven't been sneaking around. I'm sorry if you've been ditching us to go be with your dick of a boyfriend who, as a reminder, cheated on me." Thalia shook her head, like she couldn't believe what she was hearing and crossed her arms.
"You think I haven't seen you two? That hug in the hallway? Those looks you give each other? And I saw that time you guys almost kissed at the beach." Annabeth started shaking. She saw that? The memory of a creepy feeling, like someone was watching her, washed over her. That had been Thalia watching them that day.
"At least I didn't go off with your ex! Who the fuck-"
"You're such a slut, Annabeth. You couldn't even keep yourself off of my goddamn cousin." That's when Percy stood up. Annabeth was so shocked by Thalia's words that she stepped back, her knees buckling slightly.
"Shut the fuck up, Thalia," he barked. She turned to look at him, her arms crossed. "Annabeth's amazing. Never call her a slut ever again."
"And you," she said. Percy looked down on her, challenging her. Annabeth was a little frightened by the exchange between them, how the air seemed to crackle with intensity that could turn into something dangerous. She finally realized why the two were so similar. She wondered if their dads ever had fights like this. "How could you be with my best friend? We're family, Percy."
"You're with her fucking ex!" he yelled. "What the hell happened to you, Thals? I really thought you were different." Thalia stepped up to him.
"What are you, her little bitch? Wow Percy, how 'bout you grow a pair and realize that she's-"
"How about you open your eyes and see that Luke's using you?" Annabeth suddenly said. She stepped in between Percy and Thalia even though he was holding her shoulders. There were tears in her eyes.
"He's not! You're just mad because he didn't like you anymore, but that's not my fault, Annabeth! If you weren't so fucking uptight maybe you two would've lasted!"
Annabeth let the tears fall and stared at her friend in utter disbelief. What had she become? Percy was saying something, but she ran upstairs to her room and let the cousins fight. Right before she slammed her door, she saw a panting Percy running up the stairs and heard a car start downstairs. Thalia sped away in her black Jeep.
"Annabeth, we need to talk," Percy said, out of breath.
"Obviously we can't. That makes me a slut."
He came into her room anyway and closed the door. She felt so weak standing in front of him with tears streaming down her face, but that feeling quickly changed to safety when he hugged her tighter than ever before. Percy whispered sweet nothings in her ear and kissed her cheek and forehead every so often while Annabeth sobbed.
"It's okay," he promised her. Percy rubbed circles on her back, trying to calm her down and get her breathing to be even. It wasn't working.
"It's not okay," she wailed unattractively.
"Why?"
"Thalia's right." Annabeth slipped out of Percy's arms and gave him an apologetic look. She glanced at her nightstand with her purple digital clock on it before she looked back at him. Her heart was racing out of her chest.
"Percy, I'm in love with you."
