Chapter One ⇒  First Day

Michael was a new student at CDCI East in New York City. He moved from Birmingham, England, but was originally from Sydney, Australia, so his accent was a cross between British and Australian. He liked it; he thought it was a cute little quirk.

Something he wasn't used to was riding the school bus to school. Back in Birmingham, Michael's mum always drove him to school because it was on the way to her work. But here in New York, Michael's school and his mum's work were on two different sides of town, so Michael had no choice but to ride the bus.

The last time Michael rode a school bus was when he was 10 years old and he remembered having lots of other little kids at his bus stop with him. Now, he was completely alone standing at his bus stop. It might've been because the other kids decided to miss the first day or maybe it was just because he was the only person in this neighbourhood who attended the CDCI East.

Michael only had to wait five to ten minutes until a large, yellow school bus pulled up in front of him. He waited until the stop sign with the blinking light on it stretched out, the rod that extended out of the front of the bus was out and the door of the bus was open before climbing onto it.

Barren. The bus was completely empty. Not a single soul filled the bus and it made an extremely unsettling feeling fill Michael's tummy. He stood motionless at the front of the bus. His mouth was dry. Why was he so nervous all of a sudden?

"Are you ok?" A voice from behind him asked and Michael nearly pissed himself in surprise.

He spun around and was met with the prettiest shade of blue to ever fill a persons iris. A beam of sun leaking through the window caught the pretty blue orbs at just the right angle, making them look sparkly and undeniably perfect; Michael was sure that these eyes would look gorgeous at any angle though.

The eyes filled with an emotion Michael easily recognized as confusion. "Hello?" The voice spoke again and Michael's dreamy look shattered, snapping him back into the reality of the situation.

The eyes belonged to his bus driver.

It caught Michael off guard so much he had to hold onto the seat to hold his balance. In movies, the stereotypical bus drivers were grumpy old people who either constantly yelled or constantly coughed to the point where you were afraid for your life because they sounded like they were literally going to cough out all organs required to live.

Not this bus driver. This bus driver looked like he was in his early twenties. He had golden blonde hair that was perfectly but messily styled up into a quiff, a slight stubble roughing up his chin and those piercing blue eyes. Not to mention the black ring that hugged his lip, that Michael would indeed love to kiss the shit out of.

"I- I'm fine." Michael finally answered when he found his voice, though it came out very winded and forced. He took a deep breath and glanced behind himself. "Am I on the wrong bus?"

The bus driver shook his head. "Unless you aren't headed to CDCI East." He told him, closing the bus doors. "You're the first person I pick up and there's another twenty minutes until we reach the next person to pick up. Lucky you, right?"

Michael grunted and slipped into the front seat, diagonal from his bus driver. "Lucky me." He sarcastically agreed, scooting over until his side was pressed against the window.

His headphones and phone were burning in his pocket, practically screaming for Michael to take them out and listen to them. But Michael's heart was screaming at him to make conversation with his arousing bus driver.

"What's your name?" Michael asked out loud as they began driving down a straight forward road.

Michael saw his bus drivers eyes furrow in the mirror that hung above his seat and it was definitely the cutest thing Michael has ever experienced in his life.

"Luke." The bus driver, Luke, answered. He could tell that Michael was about to introduce himself as well. Luke already knew what Michael's name was, he had a sheet of all the people on his bus. But he let Michael introduce himself anyways because he didn't want to seem rude.

Surprisingly, a conversation sparked quickly between the two and they were chatting up a storm. They mostly talked about music. Both of them shared a love for bands like All Time Low, Green Day, Blink-182, Fall Out Boy and many more.

Their conversation was awkwardly cut off when Luke reached the next stop twenty minutes later. Five kids got on; there was a girl who literally looked like a Barbie doll and a boy who was practically hanging off of her who made their way to the back of the bus, two boys who were chatting and laughing about something who also sat at the back of the bus and finally a boy with curly, dirty blonde-ish hair who had ear buds shoved in his ears, who sat behind him.

Michael decided to listen to music now too, so he didn't seem like that kid, who's only friends were school staff. He felt sort of bad because he didn't even end his conversation with Luke, it just got rudely cut off. Luke was telling him about how playing guitar on the street wasn't paying rent so he took to the profession of bus driving.

The bus drive was about another hour before they reached the school and Michael nearly fell asleep, but the annoyingly bumpy roads kept him awake (and gave him a nice sized bruise on his head).

Though Michael was sitting in the front seat, he let everyone get off the bus before him because he was a kind person... But mostly because he wanted to be the last to say goodbye to his amazingly good looking bus driver.

He did as planned, smiling widely at Luke after saying goodbye. Luke smiled back at him and Michael felt butterflies swarm in his stomach. Luke's smile was really pretty.
