Time Is On My Side

"Run, Quickie, run!" Mara screamed as a large wall of stone came hurtling towards them.

Peter turned, and immediately ran towards her as fast as his body would take him. As he reached her, a slab of the wall was about to crush her. He scoffed, and redirected it away from them. Grabbing her up into his arms, he ran faster than he ever had before. As soon as they were back at the warehouse, where their conjoined teams had taken up refuge, he carefully stood her on her own two feet, and sat down on the floor. He needed to catch his breath.

Mara looked around for Peter, spotting him on his backside, panting heavily. She ran to his side, and looked into his eager eyes. She knelt before him as he sat up tall, still taking heaving breaths. She gave him a pat on the back, and sighed.

"Quickie, what is this, the eighth time you've saved me since you got here a month ago? I swear... If I had had your powers when this fight had started, there would have been no war. All the same, I'm glad you're here now. Thanks for saving my ass, again." She admitted as she grinned at him.

Peter smirked as he whispered, "That's not the only thing I'd like to do with your ass."

Mara groaned, "Still using those awful pick up lines, I see."

"Only as long as you use that awful nickname..." Peter replied.

Scoffing loudly, she stood, and walked away, joining a group standing around a large map of D.C. They were working their way towards the White House, and it was almost time to take it back.

Peter rolled his eyes and stood to join them, leaning over Mara. He glanced down at her quickly, watching her blush as she glanced up at him. He grinned at her response and turned his attention back to the briefing. It was the day that they had all been waiting for. They were going to fight their way into the capitol to save the very same country that had hated them for so long.

Peter ran ahead of the rest of the team, taking out the riff raff. He had nearly cleared a path to the back gate of the White House, when he was suddenly standing completely still, as if frozen in time. He looked around as far as his eyes could see. From behind him he heard a loud laugh. A man came to stand before him, gun in hand.

He laughed at Peter once more, and said, "Any last thoughts, since you can't speak? No? Well, I'm glad I'm the one that caught you, Mr. Lightning. I'm gonna get a good spot up front for the end of the world now. We've been trying to catch you and that little bitch you've been following around like a little puppy dog. Don't worry, she's next. Maybe you'll be together in Hell. Say goodbye, Lightning."

Peter closed his eyes as the moron lifted the gun to aim at Peter's head. He didn't believe in God, but he was praying for a miracle...

"His name's Quicksilver!" Mara growled.

Suddenly, the man fell to the floor, and Peter was free. He fidgeted, and looked around the room. He spotted Mara, who was sprawled out on the floor, trying to catch her breath. Peter sped to her, and pulled her into his arms.

There was nothing she could do but wait for the pain in her head to dissipate. She closed her eyes and finally caught her breath, taking deep puffs. She slowly regained her composure, and looked into Peter's eyes. She was surprised how terrified he looked.

"You saved me. What... what did you do to him?" Peter questioned, as Mara slowly sat up on her own.

She looked into his frightened eyes for a long moment, but shook her head, and stood up, slowly. She staggered, and Peter pulled her back into his embrace. Mara resisted, but Peter held her close, and ran until he found the rest of the group. She steadied herself as Peter released her, before turning to the others.
