Chapter 1: Checkmate
(KAYLA'S POV)
"Are you almost ready, Kayla?" My mom hollered from downstairs.
"Er, yeah mom. Coming down in just a sec." I said quickly, packing my phone into the back pocket of my shorts and slinging my Native American inspired purse over my shoulder. I'm the only person in my family with any fashion sense. My family basically lives in old jeans and oversized t-shirts. I moped the whole way down the stairs. My family is also the biggest geek family ever, with me being the only exception. I've been playing complicated, exceptionally nerdy card games since I was a toddler. not by my choice, though. I'm the most normal person in this house...I'd much rather play Call of Duty than some random card game my dad is obsessive over. But of course, my parents hate call of duty. They say its 'overly violent'. Which sucks. They also hate my taste in music-im a huge fan of Pop, like P!nk and Maroon 5. Despite my un-geekiness, I was getting dragged along to another nerd activity.
"What am I doing today?" I asked, bored.
"Chess Tournament, sweetie." my mom said with a smile as we climbed into the car.
"Yay." I said sarcastically. My mom said I had a natural 'gift' in chess. What the hell?? How can you be 'gifted' at a freaking board game? So every Saturday, I get dragged to this little game shop in the mall near our house. The shop's called 'Gaming Centre'. Like usual, I walked into the shop drawing glares from everyone. I'm the reigning chess champion, but I don't give a crap. I don't want to be a chess champ...chess is boring. Once I purposefully lost like 10 games in a row, so my parents would pull me out of the tournaments. But noooo, I had to uphold their family 'nerdness' or something. That didn't make any sense. But you know what I mean...hopefully. Anywho, I took my seat in the chess tournament, playing against some random guy as people crowded around. The poor guy looked
like his nerves were on end.
Letting out a bored sigh, I moved piece after piece until I won.
"Checkmate." I said in monotone, finally finishing the extremely dumb game. It isn't that chess is dumb...its just that if you were forced to play it 24 hours a day like me, you'd find it boring too. I felt a congratulating hand on my shoulder. I looked up, expecting to see my mom. But instead, I saw an extremely handsome guy. Only one thought crossed my mind...OHMYGOD. It's THE hottest guy I've ever seen. IN. MY. LIFE.
