I never noticed
how sunlight plays through your hair
how the light sets your hair on fire
how you became a phoenix right in front of me
how warm the sun makes your skin
I could almost taste the sunlight
how your voice was honey dripping from a hive
how you never blew your wishes on dandelions
because you said you had everything you ever wanted
how nature loved you but I couldn't
I never noticed
that the stars were in your eyes
that you were my night sky in this foul city
how you were most alive when you could see it
that we rarely saw it
that moonlight spilled down your cheeks when you cried
how the phases of the moon could also describe your curves and edges
that you seemed to sway like the moon controlled your tide
pushing and pulling you into dancing in the dark
that we only ever slow danced in the moonlight
I never noticed
how deeply you feel things
how scared you got when I left
how happy you got when I came back
how sadness left craters in your skin when
I forgot our anniversary and your birthday
how hard you laughed
your voice sticky honey
and how it made me laugh too
how you placed your love around your shoulders to keep yourself warm
when I wouldn't
how you hid behind carefully crafted smiles made just for me
how in the end
you stopped saying 'I love you'
and started saying goodbye
but most importantly
I never noticed
that I fell in love with you
until it was too late
because
I never noticed
you
