"I'm going to miss you so much C, why do you have to leave me in this hell hole?!"
I couldn't help but chuckle at my best friend Katrina, better known as Kat, as we were saying our goodbyes. My mum has just gotten a new job like 14 hours away, dragging me along with her, so today I had to say goodbye to all my friends, and Kat said she would stay with me as long as possible. It was hard enough moving around all the time, but I had been here for 2 years, which is the longest I can remember, and I just couldn’t leave them! I didn’t know if I could do that again!
“Ha-ha. At least you are not leaving to start a new life, again and with just your mum!” I mean, don’t get me wrong, I do love my mum, but just me and her, this will be interesting. “I am going to miss you so much Kat! Why can’t you just come with me? We can graduate together.” I said hopefully, although I knew the answer.
I understood that mum wanted to get out of town after we found about what dad did, he was real tool, but I didn’t want to leave my life behind! I dreaded being the new kid, again, and in senior year!
“I wish I could come C, but remember what my parents did when we asked,” we both giggled together at the memory of her parent having a general fit at the idea, “besides, Christian and I are going really well and he even asked me to prom, even though it’s like still a year away!”
Christian and Kat had finally started dating after like each other for like an entire year, but they were an adorable couple, so no one minded having to watch and wait.
“Arghh, whatever!” I said pretending to be angry with her “I will go all on my own, but promise me this Kat, don’t forget me.”
“WHAT!!!! C, how could I forget you, of all people! Do you not remember what our group was like before you got here? Exactly, there was no group, you brought us together, you brought me and Christian together”
With that her cheeks go warm in a blush and a stray tear streamed down the side of her cheek. That was it, I pulled her into yet another enormous hug and began to cry. It wasn’t a normal little cry either, it was like a ball! Kat was so important to me, she is the sister I have never had, and now I was leaving.
“I’m going to miss you soooo much Kat,” I whimpered. My tears had slowed and we were slowly walking toward my car and our final good bye.
“I’m going to miss you too C, more than you think. Call me when you get there ok?”
“Okay”
With that, we hugged once more, tears silently streaming again down both our faces. I hopped into my car, started the engine, waved one more time at my best friend.
Just before I pushed down on the gas, I remembered the bracelet I got her. Grabbing it from the seat next to me, opening the door and quickly getting out, I shoved it in her hands, jumped back in the car and left. I couldn’t face her any longer, it hurt leaving my best friend and running to a new town, again. I would apologise later but I just had to get out of here, get home and leave.
--------------------------------------------
“Mum! I’m home!” I yelled up the stairs
“Hi sweetie, we are leaving soon, just need you to pack your car and then we can be off! Aren’t you excited! A new life, a new town and all without you scum bag father!”
As she descended the stairs, and looked at me, she immediately got a questioning look on her face, and I knew that she knew I had been crying.
I spoke before she could ask questions.
“Mum, I’m fine. I will have my car packet in 10, and then can we just go!” I couldn’t help the little bit of agitation and anger that came out as I spoke. I was angry, I didn’t want to leave, but what could I do, stay with dad? Don’t make me laugh.
With that said, I turned on my heels, headed to the lounge room to get the last boxes and pack them into my own car. I was glad to be driving on my own. The plan was to drive till about 10, then stop and sleep in some cheap road side motel, and head off again at 7. Hooray for me!
20 minutes later, the keys for the house were in the agents hand, the cars were packed and we were on our way. I blasted my music through the speakers and just tried to forget what, and who, I was leaving behind.
