"Gabriella sweetie, I want you to do good on your test, okay? Mommy wants to see a bright shining star on the paper!" Mom exclaimed encouragingly.
"Yes mommy." Little me said.
"Gabriella... just try your best, okay? Ignore your mother, she's just too smart for her own good." Dad said.
"Jack, kitchen, now." Mom said lowly.
They walked into the kitchen, shutting the door.
"Stop unencouraging your damn daughter to excell!"
"I told her to try her fucking best, what do you think I said, 'jump in a hole and die, Gabby' ?!"
"That's the last straw. What am I supposed to do with you?" Mom said, frustrated.
"It's what I'm supposed to do with you, Emma." Dad sighed.
"We can't continue on this, Jack."
"Well then, I guess it's best for us to divorce."
The argument kept on going till my late nana walked in to the kitchen.
"Some bad role-models you two are for your daughter. I swear to god Emmaline if you leave my son I will let her live with your sister Mariella. And Jack, if you divorce this woman I'll cut your allowance."
"Allowance, huh Jack? A good damn reason why you never got a fucking job!"
Slap! Never add dad's manliness into the equation.
"Mother, this is a good enough reason why I want to fucking divorce her," Dad screeched, "You'll see
the divorce papers by the door, see you in court, Emma." He said, throwing the ring that sealed it all
into the trash bin, and leaving.
Mom stood still after walking near the door, tears rolling down from her eyes. As for Nana, she just silently patted Mom's shoulder and hid her head onto it.
I walked over to them, confused.
"Momma, why are you sad?" Little naive me asked, and mom wiped her tears.
"Nothing baby, Mommy was just cutting onions."
I kept thinking it was the onions until I turned 12, when my Aunt Mariella finally got the strength to tell me what really happened. And now, here I am, 4 years later at age 16, sitting on the bar stool of the kitchen of the project that Mariella Elliot Darden lives in to this day, waiting for her to finish making my breakfast, even though I told her no, she insisted.
Aunt Mariella put my plate of Bacon and Eggs on the bar table, giving me a small smile.
"Thanks Aunt Mar." I stated.
"Of course, Bamboo." To distinguish my life with my parents and my life with her, she nicknamed me Bamboo instead of the Baby or Angel nicknames Mom and Dad used to give me.
The old 1994 Patchler model home phone rang loudly, which made Aunt Mariella run to pick it up, while I began eating my bacon.
"Hello?" Aunt Mariella said into the phone.
"Oh hello Principal Merricks." She greeted.
I nearly choked on my Bacon, but thankfully gulped it down. You see, last Friday, we had an essay to report on, and so the teacher told me to stand up and go read it out to the class. Well, being me, I instead ripped it in half and kept talking about how schools were only made to control us and make us like robots, excelling every fucking subject there is.
"Parental Conference? Why, what's going on?" Aunt Mariella asked.
"A rebellious act, huh? Well okay, thank you for letting me know, Principal Merricks, and I will be sure to attend. Have a nice day." She said, hanging up.
"Alright, listen up kiddo," She said, walking over to me, "You've got two options, either no TV or no magazines with Zac Efron."
"Magazines." I said, thanking god it's not my Fantasy books.
"Well tough tootsies, I just decided to hide your Fantasy books until you finish this year properly. Man, Emma's hubby was a dickhead, he should've made you excell and enjoy school like how she was the smart ass of the family. Oh well, life goes on." She stated, going over to wash the dishes.
I groaned, "Why my fucking Fantasy books, Aunt Mar? I don't mind Zac Efron or GG."
"First of all, watch your language missy, and second of all, It just popped up in my head and I decided to do it." She stated bluntly.
Damn it, you're always ONE step ahead of me Aunt Mar.
I pushed my empty plate to the front, and began putting on my backpack.
"You done, bamboo?" She asked. I nodded, getting up and heading out the door.
"Don't do anything stupid! Oh, and I will be at that Parent Conference thingy, so don't even think about getting away from it or embarrasing me, alright Bamboo? Have fun at school!" She yelled.
Will do.
