*FLASHBACK*
"Y/N, whatever happens tonight just know that I love you."
"It's ok mom, I love you too. You do this every time.""Yes and with good reason." She said solemnly as she removed her mother's, my grandmother's, moonstone necklace from her tan neck. "I want you to keep this safe, you'll never know when someone will need it more than you do. That and if I don't come back, whatever happens next, keep April safe. She's not like us, and even though she's older she'll take care of you when you need it, but you need to look out for her just as much. If the time comes, you must become the white wolf of our clan."
"Mom, you're freaking me out...what are you going to do tonight?"
"If I told you...I don't think I could leave. That, and I would've failed as police chief of this city...and in protecting my family."
"...okay mom...do what you gotta do."
She embraced me as if it were the last time and even though my mind was blinded by my confidence in my other mother's abilities to protect herself and look out for others...I always knew it could be the last time. But this goodbye was different and it felt way more permanent. Not only was she giving me one of her most prized possessions when she came to this city...but she was saying goodbye as if she knew she wasn't going to come back...I had to look at every option and every possibility than what I heard at 7pm that night before I collapsed into Vern and April's arms, sobbing my heart out along with them. My mom has done so much for this city and the people who live in it. Most of the crooks who live here even respect her.
But that didn't matter now.
*FLASHBACK OVER*
The only thing helping everyone else see what was happening flickered off as trains whizzed past in either direction, causing distraction and more noise as I just watched April attempt to get everything on camera. But all I could hear and see were the three, no- four large figures darted to and fro, punching and kicking the foot soldiers every which way.
My senses kicking in, I felt my eyes adjust to the light and the way it shifted abruptly every time something moved. That was when I felt hands around my arms and a gun pressed against my back...well, shit.
I was so caught up in my own world I hadn't noticed the foot soldier attempting to use me as a human shield...but all I saw next was one of the shadows barrelling towards us before the guy shoved me onto the train tracks. Hardly having a moment to adjust I realised exactly where I was and started to behave like a deer in headlights when I saw the next train coming straight towards me.
April was safe...that was all I needed to know.
But then I felt much larger hands wrap around my waist and shoulders before I got pushed onto the other side of the platform. Groaning slightly at the impact, I opened my eyes only to have them meet the gaze of my rescuer. All I saw was the gold flecked with hints of green before he was...gone.
What...just happened? And what was this heavy feeling in my chest?
Next thing I knew, the hostages were filing out of the subway and the foot soldiers were tied up in their place, the bombs placed on the walls either disabled or destroyed. The situation had been taken care of...by who? I didn't know...
But what I did know was that April's vigilante theory didn't sound so crazy after all...I had just witnessed them in action.
