Chapter 2

I leapt to my feet in shock, but immediately stumbled and fell. My arms and feet would not do what I told them to do. They felt too long and strangely twisted, like they were curved or something. I began to panic.

What happened? Why am I not inside myself? Why am I... a wolf?

"Take it easy. Just try to stand up normal." The soothing female voice came out of nowhere. I turned my head quickly from side to side; trying to locate the person, but with no luck. It almost felt as though she was speaking to me from inside my head.

I was still lying on the floor not able to stand up, when my body suddenly moved by itself. Before I knew what was happening, I was standing upright, looking down on the tiny human body on the floor. "There you go," the mild voice told me. I was about to ask her what the hell had happened, when I heard a piercing scream behind me.

Still a bit out of balance, I turned around, and saw my mother standing in the kitchen door, staring at me in shock. Her face was white with fear, and her hands were trembling. When I took a step towards her she screamed again, and a man stepped in front of her; a gun in his hands. My father lifted the barrel towards me, murder in his eyes.

I opened my mouth to shout at him that this was me; his daughter, but a terrifying growl that scared even me was all I could manage. My father narrowed his eyes and pulled the trigger.

The bullets flied all around the room as I leapt from side to side, trying not to be hit. The house was filled with smoke and deafening bangs from the gun, and I was tipping over the table and breaking the chairs as I ran terrified around. I could control the wolf body better now, but the size and strength was hard to get used to. In a last desperate attempt at not being shot, I leapt towards the door with all the strength I could manage. Not only did I get out, I also made the door opening a bit bigger.

The night was dark compared to our cozy living room, but I could still see everything clearly, and I barely felt the cold. I turned around, looking at my home; now broken and full of smoke. But it was still my home. I wanted to walk back inside and try to explain to my parents that this was me, but I knew they would not understand. I didn't even understand it myself.

If wolves could cry, I would have cried now. But the tears would not come. Instead I felt the pain build up inside me, until it was almost unbearable. Then a heartbreaking howl escaped me.....

I ran off into the night, the gun shots still ringing in my head.
