Chapter 6
The trees were flying past me so fast all I could see was a green blur. My legs instinctively jumped from stone to stone, over a fallen tree, and through tall grass. I never lost my feet. The feeling of freedom was so extreme that it felt like a million bright bubbles were inside me.
I really loved running as a wolf. I felt so strong, so confident, and I could feel the strength of my muscles as they moved beneath me.
As I let out a howl of happiness, I could feel the presence of my wolf inside me. She loved the running too, I could feel. She hadn't talked to me since the first time, I guess it was not to scare me and to let me get used to being a werewolf.
Thomas - I had finally learned his name - was running behind me at a more relaxed pace. As I turned my head and smiled an excited and crazy wolf smile with my fur blowing in the wind, I could see him getting amused by my me. His golden eyes were twinkling in the evening light.
I suddenly caught a scent. A red, hot and tempting smell flowing from an defenseless animal.
Blood.
Prey.
Instinct took over again, and I quickened my pace to reach my prey as fast as possible. A deeper hunger than I had ever felt before was taking over me, and making me blind with bloodlust.
Only minutes later I was there. I gathered all of my strength in my legs and jumped, and landed right in front of the animal. Before it had a chance to run away, I drove my claws deep into the flesh and pushed it against the ground.
The sweet smell of blood made it impossible to wait any longer. I dived deep into the throat, drinking and eating at the same time. For some minutes I felt more wolf than human, as I devoured the deer quick and messy.
When I had finished, I could feel Thomas standing behind me.
I see you didn't save anything for me?
Nope. I'm still hungry.
I know. At my first hunt I ate four deer myself, so I don't blame you.
Will you find some more for me?
Follow me.
Since he had a better nose than me, I let him take the lead. I needed more - at once
After two more deer and one rabbit, my hunger was only a memory. My belly was deliciously filled, and the taste of blood still in my mouth.
The sun was going down and hung right over the horizon, soaking the world with gold. That, plus the golden layer over my eyes, made the trees around me seem like they were made of pure gold.
At our way through this golden forest, I heard my wolf speak to me.
You feel better now?
Definitely. You are... my wolf spirit, right?
Kind of. I am the soul who normally inhabits this body, as you normally have your human form. But right now we are sharing my body, and I am letting you control it.
So... you can take the control, if you'd want?
I could almost see her smug smile. Seconds later my body - if it still could be called that when I couldn't control it - was shooting forward with a lighting speed, way faster than I had been going before. Even when I tried as hard as I could to make us stop, she didn't even flinch. Her will was like an unbreakable wall, and I wasn't strong enough to overcome it.
Hah, isn't this fun? This is what I call real speed!
Give me my body back!
Hey, now! This is my body, remember.
Since I can't get back into my own, we'll have to share it.
Don't worry. You'll get back quick enough.
Thanks.
We ran in silence for some minutes, and I could feel her will lessen so I could move as I liked again.
My name is Caylin, by the way.
I'm Shay. Nice to meet ya!
I already liked her. When you shared the same body and mind, it was hard not to become friends. I may not know her that well, but I felt that I would in the future.
When I reached Thomas, he was sitting by a new bonfire in his human form, resting his back at Cole. I gave him a nod, and he smiled tired back before closing his eyes again. I liked him too.
I felt totally exhausted after the hunt, so I immediately curled up by the warmth of the fire. I fell asleep after some minutes with silent rustling of forest and crackling from the flames.
When I woke, I could feel it at once.
I was a human again.
