Chapter 4

I stood as frozen, trying to concentrate on both the wolf in front of me and the man behind me. Cold fear crept up my spine, but my head felt clear and I was ready to dodge any attacks that might come. When the man moved, I leaped quickly around and away at the same time, readying myself for the attack. But it didn't come.

The human stood still in front of me, eyes friendly but aware. His head tilted slightly, and he looked thoughtful. Then he repeated his question. "Are you a full moon? Can you let me see your eyes?" He slowly walked closer, and I forced myself to stand still and let him come to me. His rough hands lifted my head, and he stared into my eyes again. It seemed like he was looking down into a pond, trying to find something at the bottom. A stupid thought crept into my head.

If I were myself, I would blush now.

But that was ridiculous, of course. Wolves couldn't blush, or show any emotion in any other way. And even if I were a human - why would I blush? Like, it was no reason at all for blushing or my heart beating faster! It was just a handsome man holding my face and staring deep into my eyes... Nothing to worry about!

After some seconds - or a lifetime - he let me go, and I tried to get my dignity back. I was so happy he could not read my stupid thoughts. He couldn't, right? But I had heard his thought earlier, when he spoke to me as a wolf... No, that was surely something different. Some wolf-to-wolf stuff. Or so I told myself...

"I was right. You have opened your golden eyes. You look pretty fresh, am I right?" I thought I understood what he meant now, so I nodded. The movement felt slow and clumsy with the big wolf head, and the corners of his mouth moved slightly upwards. "I have always thought wolves nodding is some of the stupidest sights in this world.  It just looks... ridiculous." I lifted my eyebrows at him, then suddenly started waving my head up and down like crazy. I must have looked impossibly stupid, but for some reason I wanted to make him laugh. And he did.

His shoulders started shaking slightly, and then a sudden burst of laughter escaped him. The laughter was loud and clear, and his golden eyes was glimmering. It surprised me to see him laugh like that, as he had a quite stern face and looked more like the quiet type. I kind of liked the mix.

When he didn't look like he planned on quitting laughing, I stopped my head-shaking and watched amused as the laughter died. If I had been the human me, I would have had a huge smirk on my face right now. He had such a cute laughter.
