Welcome to the first *clap*
Stand *clap*
Review everybody. This one holds a special place in my heart because it introduced me to metal, specifically doom metal.
But anyway,1. Burakku Sabasu is an automated stand that simply follows orders from its user. When Giorno defeated him, Polpo didn't even realise or was hurt. In a way, Black Sabbath is immortal because he can just be called back after being defeated.
The stand is linked to Polpo's test and lighter and probably can't be used otherwise.
Burakku appears when someone puts out Polpo's lighter and reignites it. Its only mission is to attack and kill all witnesses of the lighter being relit, travelling through the shadows where it has the most strength to do so.
Its weakness is sunlight.
As mentioned, Black holds great strength and speed in shadows to catch up to its victim(s). When it catches up, the arrow in BSs mouth is used to impale the victim.
This arrow is special, as its used to awaken a stand in the victim. I won't really get into the arrows now though I might later.
Polpo uses his lighter test and Black Sabbath with its arrow to weed out the standless recruits; if the arrow impales someone who isn't strong enough to use a stand, they will die. Example: the old janitor in the early chapters of Vento Aureo.Compared to other stands, Black Sabbath doesn't seem that strong. Because it isn't a 'combat stand' type, maybe. But as I already mentioned, it can be re-used again after being defeated.
Its shadow ability should not be underestimated.
When Giorno was fighting Black to get revenge for the old janitor, he had trouble staying out of the shadows as it was nearing night time as well as stepping into the smallest shadow, even a bird's, could let Black grab you. If you weren't a stand user, Black can forcibly drag out your soul. Definetly a chilling stand ability.
Seeing everyone Polpo recruited proves Black is definetly a useful stand. But Giorno, who was new to stand fights, could defeat him.Now for the good part,
2. References.
Black Sabbath is an old 1970's band that is known as a pioneer to heavy metal. The stand is referenced after the self-titled song in the self-titled album, which was also the bands debut.
A link to the song:https://youtu.be/2KnyL4IFcwo
If you listened to it, (hopefully the link worked)
You would notice the very heavy and 'edgy' characteristics of the first doom metal song. (Which I absolutely love)
These relate to the design of the stand as well as the ability.
The song lyrics describe some paralysis-like being, fitting the stand. When we first see Polpo with Giorno, Giorno saw Polpo eat his fingers but assured himself he was imagining it. This scene doesn't make much sense in the anime and manga as it wasn't explained.
This was actually a reference to Tony Iommi- the talented guitarist of Black Sabbath getting some of his fingers cut off.2.5
A movie, you may have heard of it, The Godfather was also referenced in Polpo and his Black Sabbath.
Don Corleone (the Godfather) is always seen in the shadows in the movie. Shadows represent the bad, or maybe evil. Black Sabbath the stand, travels through the shadows.I'm sure there are a bunch more references, especially in Polpo/The Godfather, but since this is stand review, I won't get into them.
3. Design.
(This design bit is all from my head,so sorry if its all over the place)I think Black Sabbaths design works perfectly.
The cape and hat give the impression of a powerful, king-like being- which fits because Black decides either you're worthy of a stand or you die, if you cross it.
The colours of course, are black, matching the name. The slight gold in lining the hat, scarf, and other areas minorly give the black a bit of contrast as well as fitting the king vibe I talked about earlier.
The purple works too, but kinda only with the red which I'm not sure is there.
In a way, I think its cute. The big headpiece and scarf thing remind me of a bird for some weird reason.3.5
Black Sabbath really isn't a atand that's talked about a lot, probably because of its short little battle in the beginning. I haven't discussed it with friends or anyone, so I'm not sure what others think. But to me, Black Sabbath was one of the best things in early Vento Aureo. Araki definetely doesn't half-ass his stands or characters, seeing as every time I rewatch or reread some JoJo's I always pick up some little references to songs or other things.
I haven't looked into other stands, but if all the others are as carefully detailed as Black Sabbath when you look into them (oho I definetely didn't cover all of Black Sabbath/Polpo)
Then, I don't know what to say, except to respect Araki more. Thanks for listening (reading?) To me ramble on about a random stand. It's been fun but I didn't cover everything because, I'm me, and I'm lazy.
Since this is my first stand review, its a bit eh, hopefully they'll get better the more I do them. I have an idea of who I'll do next,
*it may or may not be Sex Pistols
*I just got another idea and it's Heavens Door
But if anyone reading wants me to do a particular stand then shoot.By the way, the copyright free English name is Shadow Sabbath. To be honest it's one of the better ones.
*extra cute lil black sabbath
I kinda wanna strech this to exactly one thousand words because otherwise it'll bother me so here I go; I feel like I spent too many words on the conclusion instead of the actual thing so sorry about that, but you know, I will improve
