Anne hastily raced up the stairs and burst through the door. Just behind her was Gilbert Blythe who was also panting, trying to catch his breath. The class fell into silence and turned to face them. Miss Stacy smiled, "Nice of you two to join us, come on, take your seat." Giggles and whispers filled the class. Anne tensely chuckled as well, her face as red as her fiery hair, walking to her seat. Diane shared a look of empathy and a shy smile.

"Not a word."

"I haven't said anything." Anne looked at her, suspiciously squinting her eyes, "Yet." Diane said with a sly smile, acting innocent. Anne groaned.
"Now that everyone's here," Miss Stacy looked specifically in Anne and Gilbert's direction. "Let's go back to studying different countries so that it can help you chose your future vocations and colleges."

---

"So as many of you may have noticed that Miss Andrews has not been attending school, that is for the reason she was just accepted to go to Collège des Jésuites in France! And now that you're all grown and now are coming to age you should all be thinking about your futures" The bell rang alerting the class.

"Okay, class it's time for a break, Oh! And while you're outside, I want you to think about what your future vocation--" A loud and disturbing knock interrupted Miss Stacy. Everyone's attention turned towards the door. Shortly a face followed to match the sound. The man was a blue-eyed blondie and as tall as Miss Stacy. He was wearing a suit with a wolf broach holding a letter in one hand with a hat in the other.

"Hello! I am extremely sorry for interrupting your class. I seem to have a letter for Miss Stacy?" He said, checking the back of the letter. "Will?" Miss Stacy breathed out. The young man, who now wore a grin making most of the girls' swoon, walked towards Miss Stacy to deliver the letter.
"Oh! I almost forgot I have heard that there may or may not be a peculiar package waiting for you at home." The man winked and turned to the class giving a small wave and left. All eyes were on the teacher who was staring at the letter in her hands with a soft smile on her face.

"Um, Miss Stacy?" Miss Stacy looked up to see Ruby with her hand up.

"Yes?"

"Can we go for our break?" Billy spoke out for the girl.
Like out of a trance, Miss Stacy shook her head and nodded. "Yes, go enjoy your break kids." With that, she went into the other room that acted as a sort of office. Everyone stayed in their seats questioning, what had just happened. Diane was the first to move, dragging Anne with her. "Well. Come on. I'm famished." with that the students gathered their lunches and head outside.   Once all the girls got seated in their usual places, the rumors began.

"I think that he's a lover and the letter is from him!"

"Who? The guy who gave it?"

"No, I don't think so." another turned the thought down quickly.

"But you saw the way they looked at each other and he sent her a wink!"

Anne huffed gently, having no interest in gossiping about her only favorite teacher. Ruby has somehow miraculously brought the topic to her love for Gilbert Blythe, how 'he is so smart' and 'already has his life planned out' with, getting the student of the month award. This ticked Anne even more, though they were now friends and casually talked when they were alone together. They still competed a lot comparing their general knowledge and test results. Anne had gotten used to having Gilbert around and started to enjoy his company, though she would never admit this, the girls would kill her. With a heavy sigh, she sipped her milk dozing off.

"Anne, Anne?" She turned to Diane. "I've been calling you for the past five minutes."
"Oh. Hey, isn't break over?" she questioned turning the attention from her.
"Who cares? More free time for us!" A few moments later, Miss Stacy still hadn't appeared and the bell didn't ring. The boys had stopped playing around and those who were reading or writing in their books also joined the others in a giant circle. All the students sat dumbly not knowing what to do and thinking the same thing, 'What's going on'?
"Let's go inside." Gilbert being Gilbert suggested. The rest unanimously agreed and started to head back to class. They waited on their seats for the teacher. The silence was killing Anne she wished someone would just --
"That's it!" Anne declared and dashed to the other room. She gave one last look to the class and saw Diane nodding her head encouragingly. With that, she knocks at the door. Footsteps could be detected and some scraping, then Miss Stacy steps out. She looked more cheery than usual.

"Oh! Hello Anne!"

"Um. . . Hello?"

"Well, go on take a seat! We don't have a second to spare." She stated shooing Anne. "So, class I hope you have have been thinking about your vocations." She walks to the center of the teacher's desk. "Let's start with Anne."

"Oh, well, I would like to become a teacher to help and inspire others, just like you."

"That's wonderful Anne! Hm. What about you Ruby?"

"Oh, I don't know yet."

"That's alright, you all have plenty of time to think about your vocations it is just better to think about it now so that you can start working towards your goals." Everyone nodded or hummed in approval. "So, Gilbert what would you like to be and why?" All attention shifted to Gilbert.

"A doctor, I want to fight disease and pain and ignorance. I want to do my share of honest, real work in the world. The folks who lived before me have done so much for me that I want to show my gratitude by doing something for the folks who will live after me."

"Wonderful Gilbert. Now both Gilbert and Anne have already chosen their vocations, now it depends on them if they would like to change it in the future or not but, for now, they can start working towards their goals." The bell disrupts the studious environment. "Oh. That was quick. Now you all should have an idea of what your future vocations might be tomorrow! Oh, Anne, Gilbert?" Both stopped to face Miss Stacy. "May I speak with you before you leave?" Both nodded a little fearful as to what might happen. 'Am I in trouble?' both thought. Gilbert stood a few steps back from Anne. "Anne I see that you want to be a teacher correct?" She nodded. "I think you should apply to Queen's Academy or Redmond College and if you would like I could guide you and give you some tips later?" Anne almost burst in excitement, getting to spend more time with her favorite teacher? Yes, please! Gilbert smiled at her happiness. Anne quickly composed herself.

"I promise you, Miss Stacy, you will not regret teaching me and I will make it worth it!" Miss Stacy smiled. "I know you will."

"Congrats, Anne." Gilbert finally said with his hand out, she shook it with a smug look which said 'Ha! Beat that Blythe!' "Thanks."

"Anne, your free to leave if you please I won't be holding you back any longer." Anne smiled and went to collect her belongings but still kept her ears open eavesdropping on the conversation. What? If Gilbert knew what she was called for, then it's her right to know why he was.

"Gilbert, you know you are one of the most studious and brightest students I have and I know how hard you have been working and studying. So, there is an upcoming competition that will take place in a few weeks. The prize is a free scholarship to a prestigious school, where you can complete your studies and become a doctor."

"That's ... That's amazing! H-How do I sign up?"

"Before you do jump into this there is a test which is sort of an entrance exam. It's taking place in Charlottetown. Then the selected few will go to New York, America for the School and actual competition."

"What?" traces of excitement start to fade from Gilbert, yet Miss Stacy still has a smile.

"Now I know what you might be thinking 'Oh America is so far away' but, I have a friend who can take you there and they are also willing to house you for the competition then the scholarship includes a dorm room to accommodate the winners." Gilbert was facing the floor, Miss Stacy sighed. "Look Gilbert, I'm not forcing you to choose and make your decision right now I'm only asking you to think about it." Miss Stacy said patting him on the shoulder and walking into her office room. As Gilbert turned to collet his books he saw Anne in the center of the room, looking expressionless.

"Congrats Gilbert, I guess you finally beat me." She muttered quickly and rushed out the door. Gilbert tried to call after her but his voice was stuck in his throat. He sighed and while rubbing the back of his neck, he started to head home.
