After I held Ally, I left the store. When I got to the food court, I remembered the lyric sheet for the new song we were writing. When we were hugging I set it down the recording table. I raced back to Sonic Boom. Taking the stairs two at a time, I heard Ally talking to someone. I didn't want to barge in so I just listened.
"I know it's going to be hard, Ally." I heard a women's voice say.
"Mom," Ally whispered just loud enough for me to hear. Her voice was raw and thick as if she was crying. "I can't. I have my music, my friends and-" she hesitated. "Austin."
"Who's Austin?" Ally's mother said.
"He's-" She took a deep breath, "I don't know. He's my friend, I guess."
"How long have you known him?" Mrs. Dawson asked.
"2 months." A strangled cry came from her. "And now I'm never going to see him again!" She yelled the last part. I heard her start to run for the door. I realized a little too late I wasn't supposed to be standing there. The door flew open and Ally smashed into me. I fell over and she was on top of me.
"Austin?" she whispered, barely audible.
Her mom came through the door and saw us. She didn't say anything though.
Helping Ally up, I squeezed her hand and said, "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to eavesdrop."
That's when Ally started sobbing. Even though her mother was right there she pulled me in and cried on my chest. I held her while her mother watched.
I leaned down to her ear and started whispering things like, "It's gonna be okay." "I'll always be here." Which only made her cry more. The whole time her mother stood there motionless, watching this unfold.
Finally, after a few minutes Ally quieted down.
"How much did you hear?" Her voice cracked.
"Ally-ummm" I turned to her mom. "Can we speak alone for a minute?"
She nodded and I pulled Ally inside the practice room. Shutting the door behind me, Ally sat on the piano bench.
I sat next to her as tears started to run down her face again. My arms were around her and her legs were over mine.
"Ally," I said rubbing her back. "What's going on?"
"My mom's home." She said quietly.
"But why are you crying?"
"She lived in Australia for 7 years. She's just staying here for a while."
So she was upset because her mom was leaving again?
"In 5 days," she continued. "And she says my dad and I are going with her."
I felt like a pin made its way into my heart.
"Ally-I." Didn't know what to say.
"There's no way I'm getting out of it either."
That's when I started to cry. Tears flowed down my face silently.
After a long, dead silence, both of our tears were gone. It was about 20 minutes we sat there. When I remembered my brother and Carrie.
"Ally." I shot to me feet. "We have to go, like now."
