I woke up later to a pop in my ears. The humming of the helicopter wings could be heard in the background quietly. My necked ached like crazy, but I resisted the urge to get up and crack them. I held back a yawn, as I probably shouldn't wake anyone up right now. I looked to my right, surprised to see that Erica was sleeping. Actually, fake sleeping most likely. You never know with Erica Hale. It didn't really matter anyhow, as she was the best spy in school, even in her sleep. A strand of hair had fallen in her face as she was maybe "asleep". I tucked it behind her ear, my hands tingled at the feeling of her skin. So soft and beautiful. That's interesting. She didn't even stir. So she actually was asleep. If she knew I'd done that to her, she'll probably threaten to kill me. Again. In her sleep, she almost looked like a normal teenage girl. Although her eyes were beautiful, they were also scary and intimidating.
I felt something rub against my shoulder blade and looked left. My head was still resting on Zoe's shoulder. I looked at her and did some thinking. She wasn't mad at me anymore, I think. I'm glad she was understanding about it and how it didn't affect our friendship. I'm not sure what to do next though. I knew she still liked me for now, but what about me? I'm just confused. I looked down to see that we were holding hands. That startled me and I gave her hand a firm squeeze. Her long eyelashes fluttered open immediately. Instincts of being a good spy. The large meadow green eyes peered around half closed.
"Has the helicopter landed already?" She asked me in a tired voice.
"Um...no. Sorry, I woke you up on accident." I replied sheepishly.
"Oh, why'd you wake me up on accident if we're not there yet?" She asked. She stretched her arms out and realized that our hands were linked together. "Oh, um, l—" she stuttered turning red.
"No, I'm sorry, it was probably my fault." I quickly said about to let go of her hand.
Zoe looked offended. "You're sorry. As in you're sorry for holding my hand?" Why, were you hoping for it to be someone else?
My turn to be embarrassed. My ears reddened. "No, of course not! I just didn't ask for your permission to, that's all! I promise! I didn't ask if you were okay with it. I'm not sorry to hold your hand! I mean, um, I'm still sorry for holding your hand without asking, just not sorry for the fact that I held it...and besides, it's not our first time too! I would love nothing more than to hold hands with you!" I rambled off quickly. God, help me.
"Look, Ben, I was kidding. You look really cute all flustered." I went into a deeper shade of red. "Oh! I mean, um," she quickly realized what she had just said and added, "What I meant to say is that you don't have to ask for permission to hold my hand..."
"Yep, that's exactly what I heard!" I exclaimed before things would get any more awkward. "Are you sure you don't mind..., I mean, are you comfortable with me doing it often then?"
She rolled her eyes. "Ben, since when does the man ask the woman to hold her hand in a movie or book?"
"Well, never..."
"And, if the man does it romantically enough, and the woman actually likes him, since when does the woman pull away disgusted and slap him?"
"That's also a never..."
"Exactly, so I don't mind you holding my hand!"
"Um, that's great! I'll keep it in mind in the future..." Hearing her say that she enjoyed holding my hand made me more excited than I ought to be.
It struck me hard suddenly. Zoe looked glowing with the moonlight shining on her. Her short brown wavy hair was so silky and smooth, I slowly raised my fingers behind her head to touch it. She leaned closer. I realized how close we were. She still smelled like rose petals. The meadow green eyes were mesmerizing. I came closer. I wanted to come closer to her this time. I didn't want to pull back for some reason. I wanted it to be different than last time at the Villa in Aquarius.
Zoe looked at me expectantly. Should I...? I tilted my head until our mouths were no more than a mere inch apart.
