The children watched
as their mother screamed
at the men across the hall.
Threats and arguments,
promises they couldn't, wouldn't, won't keep.
The building flinched, peeling apart,
bit by bit,
but no one seemed to care
as long as they looked better,
seemed better
than the others.
The children protested from the quiet corner.
The children watched
the building unravel
in
absolute,
and
utter
horror.
