A little after John Rolfe left, Pocahontas, I and the others had been sitting in a cozy room conversing with Mrs. Jenkins. Well, Pocahontas and I mostly of course. We spent the time listening to her tell stories about John Rolfe and his family, and how he was as a child. Uttamatomakkin oddly had a pleased smile on his face after he tried Mrs. Jenkins’ little sandwiches. Meeko tried several time to take some and eat them, but Uttamatomakkin scared him off, but he still managed to sneak one here and there.

Not long after we heard the front door slam and in response Mrs. Jenkins broke another piece of china. Pocahontas perked up, she was eager with what news he brought but I assumed it didn’t go as he planned. He appeared in the doorway of the small and cozy room and looked passed Pocahontas, straight to me.

“Ayame,” he said, rubbing a temple. “May I have a word with you for a moment?”

“Sure.” I got up and followed him out of the room. We crossed the front of the stairs going across the room to another room with a table and bookshelves, and a desk. It looked like a study. He sighed and placed his hat on the table. “So, what happened? I’m guessing it didn’t go as planned?”

            “It was a disaster!”

            “What happened?”

“She’s now invited to the hunt ball!”

            “So, meeting with the king?”

“Our meeting with the king has been corrupted.”

“And that’s a bad thing? Sounds like progress.”

“Oh, it’s a trap! Ratcliffe manipulated the king!  He says that if she’s as civilized as I say then she can fit right in with no problem.” He started to pace. “But it’s the elite of British society—etiquette and manners. There’s a million ways she can insult someone. Believe me I know.” He then stopped and took a deep breath. “I have no idea what to do.”

“You can help her can’t you? It shouldn’t be that hard…”

“Well, I suppose…but if she slips up just once, Ratcliffe could convince the king that—“

“Then I must not ‘slip up’” Pocahontas appeared from around the corner and came in.

            “Pocahontas…?”

“I can’t learn your ways alone, but you can help me.” John Rolfe smiled. “And Ayame, can learn too. Will you do it with me Ayame?”

            “Oh? Uh…well…I don’t know.” I said.

“Please, Ayame?” She took hold of my hands. “It would be much more fun if you did it with me.”

“It may also make it easier for her. Not a bad idea. And even though you are not the primary object of this situation, it wouldn’t hurt to learn,” John Rolfe added.
