her hands brush against his as he intertwines his fingers with hers, his head pointed down as they walk. she's tired--he is, too, but her exhaustion is written clear on her face and his is more so hidden away inside--and he's in love and the two of them are the worst combination possible and yet neither of them can find it within themself to draw a line in the sand, and so they don't.
there's a light breeze and the air smells like the pastries that are baking down the street at their favorite bakery, the one they met at. he looks over at her and spots the little dimple on her cheek, notices the way her lips have tilted up as she peers down the street at the led sign outside of the bakery. he squeezes her hand and she looks down again, the silver rings adorning her fingers cool against his skin. "you hungry?" he asks, just as sweet as ever.
she shakes her head and tips her chin up to look at him and he can't help but grin, lazy and content in the moment. "you're staring, dave," her voice is soft, timid, as though she can already sense the storm coming. she wonders if they'd be better off just breaking it off now, preventing the both of them from getting a little too attached. if she was honest with david, she thinks he'd run off with his tail between his legs. "'m not hungry. let's go?"
he nods, although they've come to a stop on the sidewalk underneath a streetlight. the sun is setting and people are getting off work, los angeles traffic just as busy as ever. they'd been out filming--or he'd been out filming and she'd tagged along--and now they're walking back to david's house and he thinks that with every step, he's falling more and more in love with her.
his hand comes up to hold her face, cupping her jaw. she squints up at him, a little smile playing on her lips as their eyes meet, his brown and hers so green he thinks that whole forests could grow there if he stares into them long enough. "gimme a kiss," he mumbles, dipping his head to close the distance between them. and so she does, pressing her mouth against his, soft and sweet and gentle.
she pulls back, smiles and squeezes his hand. "another," there's a little smile on david's lips, a playful look dancing behind his eyes. she pretends to consider the demand, pressing her index finger against her chin and tapping as if deep in thought. "please."
"how could i say no to that?" she giggles softly, lifts herself up again and brushes her mouth over his, the tip of her nose brushing against his. he wants to stay in this moment forever, content and warm under her touch. his heart is almost bursting in his chest and hers is just about the same, although neither of them are ready to admit it just yet. maybe a week from now, or maybe tomorrow. just not right now, david thinks, as his tongue sweeps across her bottom lip, a little laugh leaving her lips as she pulls away, a playful glare shot his way. "naughty," she teased, jabbing two of her fingers into his side.
"couldn't help it," he answered, smiling. she'd dressed in a sun dress that cinched around her waist and made her look like something straight out of a fairytale and david doesn't think he's ever seen someone look quite so pretty, especially not as she tilts her head and the setting sun hits her just right. "you're too cute."
she doesn't answer at first, just squints up at him and shakes her head. there's a little dimple on her left cheek that looks incredibly prominent in this moment as she grins up at him, their hands interlocked. she thinks that he's probably the last person she'll ever have to say i love you for the first time to. she thinks that maybe she's getting a little ahead of herself. maybe she should tell him that first before she gets too caught up in the idea of them being together for the rest of their lives.
he thinks that she looks really pretty right now, and so he squeezes her hand again and when that draws her attention, grins down at her. it's one of those grins that he only gets when he's genuinely happy, when his teeth are shown in all their glory and the tip of his tongue is peeking out ever so slightly, his eyes crinkled up at the corners. he looks happy and he is happy and that's enough for the both of them, at least for now. "hey," she says, her fingertips dancing over the back of his hand. "i like you."
david tips his head, tongue sweeping out to wet his bottom lip. "i like you too," he answers, closing the distance between them to press a kiss to her mouth, wet and sloppy and soft and somehow it's still everything she could ever want sealed up in one movement.
