CHAPTER THREE
SHEET-FACED SHENANIGANS
( episode 2: trick or treat, freak )

'Harper! You bringing the Chief to Tina's tonight?!'

'Yeahhh Harper!'

The two boys swoop past Violet, slipping out of sight around a corner. A few passerbys snicker, their discreet laughter trailing out through the crowded hallways.

Violet had completely lost track of the amount of stories that had surged out of yesterday's incident which, to Nancy's "surprise" that was clearly in order to make her feel better, had not gotten better today. The last she had heard on the story, she'd been exposed as an undercover spy smuggling drugs through small American towns like Hawkins. Violet just hoped the rumours wouldn't make it to her Mother at her rare weekly trip to the supermarket.

'Just ignore it,' Nancy tells her as they mingle around their lockers before homeroom. 'I'm telling you, give it a week at best and they'll move on. You'll totally forget about it.'

Violet smiles at her casually, but deep down, she was desperately hoping that Nancy Wheeler was right.

'Hey, you uh, wouldn't happen to know where block S30 is?' Violet asks her. She didn't particularly want to walk there alone.

'Yeah, that's the block opposite my first period. I'll take you there,' she offers.

'Thank you,' Violet replies gratefully.

'When's your free today?' Nancy asks.

'Uhhh, forth I think?'

'Hey, snap!' she exclaims. 'Look at us, already synchronising classes and frees,' she teases, tucking a book under her arm.

Violet blinks. There was a part of her that was tugging at her stomach, the same feeling when she'd been handed that invite last night. This girl had completely taken Violet under her wing, and she'd been here for two days. Was she in on something with her douchey boyfriend? Surely not. She was just being nice. There was no way a girl in a pastel blue Christmas sweater sporting frizzy brunette locks, clean eyeliner and a sprinkle of freckles across the nose could be maleficent in any way. She was completely innocent. But, Maybe that was just half of the act to Nancy Wheeler, Violet assumes to herself. Maybe it wasn't.
