Six Weeks Earlier..
Stepping inside The Firefly, I could feel everyone's eyes on me.
The gold details of the champagne playsuit I'd spent weeks designing shimmered in the candlelight from the tables, giving it the ethereal look I'd intended. Framed by my dark chocolate, waist length curls and finished off with a pair of gold Louboutins, I felt like a million bucks.
"There she is!" My friend Enzo called from his spot behind the bar. "Miss Fancy Fashion Intern!"
I slid onto the stool in front of him with a bashful grin and fingered the layered gold chains at my collarbone. "Yeah, yeah. You know what I'm here for."
"I got you, doll." He placed three empty shot glasses in front of me and filled them with my favorite honey whiskey, topping each off with a maraschino cherry. "And congratulations. You deserve this more than anyone."
"Thank you. Don't tell me I'm the first to arrive to my own celebration," I pouted, scanning the bar for our other friends. "I purposely came an hour late to make an entrance."
Enzo shook his head. "Damon cheated on Presley again, so Bonnie took her to the ladies' room to calm down."
"Again?" I downed two of the shots and then slid off the stool with a groan. "That guy is such a fucking toolbag. I'll be right back."
I strode back to the restroom with a fire burning in my chest. The whiskey was swirling through my veins, mixing with anger at the way my best friend had been treated by her man for the last year.
I knew my face must have matched my thoughts, because a tall, handsome man literally jumped out of my way.
"Wow, someone's in trouble," he remarked with a wry smile. Catching a hint of an accent, I peeked back over my shoulder after I passed by him.
Surprise colored his cheeks adorably at my double take, and I reminded myself to go back and check him out properly once I knew Presley was okay.I pushed the bathroom door open with all my strength, smirking in appreciation at the resounding bang that filled the room.
Presley was in the corner with tearstained cheeks, our other best friend Bonnie stroking her hair soothingly."I told Damon the next time he stuck his dick in someone else, I was going to cut it off," I growled. "Just say the word, and it's done."
Presley offered a weak smile, dabbing at her eyes delicately with a crumpled tissue. "Thanks, Li. Both Bonnie and Enzo already offered to remove it from his body."
"Well, we can all take turns. It will probably take awhile to find it," I shrugged. I pulled her head to my chest, pressing a kiss to the top. Presley always smelled like lilac shampoo, the scent a calming reminder of her gentle demeanor.
She was basically the opposite of me.
While Presley was spun sugar personified, I was five feet of fire and brimstone. You'd think our personalities would clash, but we balanced each other out nicely.
