Six Weeks Later..

"You-- you're what now?" Kol's open mouthed stare would have been comical, had this not been the most somber moment of my entire life.

"Pregnant. And it's yours."

Presley and I had practiced this moment no fewer than twenty times, but I never could quite get the whole 'softening the blow' thing down.

I glanced around the room, my eyes falling on the guitar laid against the bedframe. Of course I'd get knocked up by a frat boy guitar player with an accent. He probably rode a motorcycle, too.

I was a walking cliché.

"Are-- are you.." Kol began, but I cut him off with a wave of my hand.

"Sure? Yes, a home test and a doctor confirmed it." I clenched my jaw, in case that wasn't his only concern. "And you're the only possible candidate."

He closed his mouth, studying my face with a curious expression.

"Before you ask, I don't expect you to have anything to do with this pregnancy or the baby. I am more than capable of handling this whole thing on my own financially."

I folded my arms across my chest and pressed my lips together to stop the rest of my jumbled thoughts from tumbling out just to fill the silence.

"Uh.. okay." He swallowed hard.

Just a few minutes ago, Kol was looking forward to a threesome with two semi-attractive sorority sisters, and now he was staring fatherhood in the face. I could see why he would need a second to process this whole thing.

I moved forward, taking his hand in mine and giving him a look I hoped was sympathetic. "I'm sorry to just spring this on you, Australia."

His lips quirked in response.

"I know you don't even know my last name, and you have no reason to want this child, but I do." I heard the crack in my own voice and grimaced at my weakness. "Sorry." I dropped his hand and spun away from him to hide my whimper. "Stupid hormones."

When a traitorous tear escaped my eye, a handkerchief was gently placed in my hand.

I turned slightly to face Elijah and murmured a soft thank you, before dabbing at my eyes. For some reason, just the reminder he was in the room tempered the storm raging inside my heart.

But I still needed to get out of there. I did the right thing and told him I was pregnant. There was nothing else I could do at this point.

"I guess I'll catch you later," I called over my shoulder, before slipping out into the hallway.

"Wait!" Kol rushed to the door, leaning against the frame and still wearing the same dumbstruck expression. "Can I have your number now, Lila? I'd like to chat properly about all this."
