The next morning, I was awakened by the sound of the doorbell. Valentino, who had been snuggled up at the foot of my bed, ducked under the vanity with a disdainful growl.

I reluctantly rolled out of bed, tied a silk robe around my waist, and made my way over to the peephole.

"Elijah?" I ran a hand through my hair and pulled open the door, wishing I had at least glanced in a mirror.

"Good morning," he smiled, handing me a pink bakery box. I didn't even need to peek inside to know he'd brought me a Nutella Pie.

"You've already got me all figured out, haven't you?" I teased, stepping back to give him room to enter. "I promise I would have let you in, even without the pie."

I placed the box on the countertop, and felt him come up behind me.

He pressed a lingering kiss to my cheek, before spinning me around to face him. He smiled bashfully, his own cheeks taking on a pinkish hue.

"Forgive me for just showing up like this, but I wanted to make sure you were okay after dinner with your mother."

"Oh! I'm so sorry for not texting you when I got home. It was a long day, and I passed out the second I got back from the Kappa House," I explained. I moved to the cabinet, pulling down the jar to fill the coffee maker with decaf grounds.

"The Kappa House?" His frown reminded me why I tried not to mention Kol in his presence.

"I had to fess up to my mother about little JB, so naturally she wants to meet the man she can hold responsible." I pointed to the ultrasound I'd hung back on the fridge. "Then I had to go to the frat house and tell.. um, him that we were having lunch with my mother today."

Elijah tried his best to smile, though it didn't reach his eyes. "You don't have to be afraid to talk about my brother, Lila. I'm well aware that you two will be in each other's lives from now on." He pulled me into his arms and I let his his comforting presence soothe my nerves.

"But I don't want to rub it in your face." I peeked up at him with a sympathetic smile. "I know it must be hard for you."

He nodded, and I nuzzled further into his chest. "I try not to think about it more than I have to. But the reality is that things are complicated, and it won't do us any good to pretend they're not."

"I know," I sighed, rubbing my hand down the back of his suit jacket. "My mother seemed a little disappointed that you weren't the father. I think maybe she likes you."

"Well, I'm glad to hear that." His returning half smile was so adorable, it took all my self control not to kiss him senseless. "I like her, too."

"Liar!" I swatted his chest playfully. "You don't have to say that, trust me," I assured him.

I grabbed a couple of mugs from their hooks. "Will you stay for coffee, handsome? I probably won't see you today otherwise." I had a full day of classes, plus a lunch break from Hell on my schedule.
