CHAPTER V (Song: Gehenna)
The day had ended early, seeing as it had been early release at school. Cameron decided she would walk home from school so that she could get ready for work. She had filled out all of the necessary paperwork and had already turned it in to Jack the day before. Hopefully, he had given it to the right person, though she could only pray. It only took her about thirty minutes to get home, thanks to her moderately fast walking. She opened the front door quietly, knowing that her Aunt would probably still be sleeping and that her Uncle was at work. Cameron then climbed the staircase and entered her room, only to throw her bookbag down and leave once again. She made sure she had her own key to the house, and departed for the town bus stop.
On her walk there, a red Mustang GT passed her; it looked fairly old, and square in its features. The car halted and then backed up slowly, until it was stopped where Cameron was. The window came down, revealing a smiling Jack.
"Need a ride?" He put the car in park, and then looked back over to Cameron.
"Uh...I don't think I do. I can walk---"
"But we're both going to work, right?"
Cameron raised her eyebrow in thought and then huffed before walking over to the car.
Jack's grin widened as he reached over to open the passenger door for her. She got in, and closed the door behind her as Jack shifted the car back into drive. "So what made you change your mind?"
"I figured it's better than walking in the cold."
"No kidding. Besides, you wouldn't want to get picked up by a stranger and get kidnapped, would you?"
Cameron laughed once, "Right. Like that would ever happen here."
Jack's expression changed to one full of grim seriousness, "Well, it does. You can't trust people around here just because the town seems nice and stable, Cameron."
Cameron met Jack's cold eyes, waiting for his mood to lighten. "Alright. Sorry," she stapled the end of the conversation when she noted that it didn't. The rest of the ride was silent, save that of the radio that Jack had turned on to create an 'ambiance'. About fifteen minutes later, they arrived at the music store. Jack turned the car off and Cameron took off her seatbelt.
"Alright," Jack's jubilant demeanor was back, "So, what exactly are you going to do for two and a half hours?"
Cameron turned to stare at Jack with an unreadable expression, "...what? I thought that the store opened up at----"
"Not on weekdays. It opens at four-thirty." Jack grinned at Cameron, who was a little bewildered as to why she even decided to come to work today. On the other hand, it was Jack's fault for not telling her sooner.
"Well, I guess I can go back home...? I don't want to wait here for two and a half hours." Cameron turned in home's direction, but Jack stepped in front of her.
"Hold on," he demanded, "You don't seriously want to go home, do you...?"
Cameron sighed and pursed her lips, "Do you have any better ideas?"
"Well...." Jack looked at Cameron wearily, waiting for her approval of him to continue. She nodded once, and he smirked, "You can come over to my house for a while and we can play video games or something..."
Cameron narrowed her eyes at Jack, waiting for him to respond with a 'I'm just kidding around'. But there was nothing, only silence as Jack waited for Cameron's decision. Cameron really didn't like being alone with someone else in their house, especially seeing as she hadn't known Jack for that long...not to mention the fact that she had never been at a boy's house before. "I don't think so. I have to go home to check up on some things---"
