The Serpent and the Nerd

Chapter 16

As soon as the bell rang and the class was over, Betty grabbed her stuff and rushed home, not waiting for jughead or the others. "Betts wait!" Jughead called after her but she didn't stop. "What was that about?" Sweetpea asked. "I think it was about the parent/ teacher conference" jughead sighed as they all walked out of school. "Should we go and talk to her?" Toni asked. "Yeah, I think we should" jughead said as they all walked in the direction of Betty's house. When they got there, they knocked on the door but she didn't answer. Fangs peeked through the window but it was empty. "I don't think she's here guys" he said. "I'll call her" jughead said and pulled out his phone, dialling Betty's number.

"Where would she go?" Toni asked, they couldn't get a hold of Betty so they decided to head to pops. "I'm sure she just wants some alone time" jughead said. "It pains me when I think about it, but we have to remember that she was on her own before we came along. She'll be okay" Jug added. "Wait Guys... shes there!" Sweetpea said and pointed into pops where Betty was sat on the counter, talking to Pop. "So do you think you could start tomorrow?" They heard pop says and Betty nodded. "Yeah of course" Betty said and jughead was confused. What were they talking about. "Betts?" Jug said and Betty spun around to meet her friends and boyfriend. "Hi" she said. "Are you Okay?" Jughead asked and Betty just nodded; but he knew she wasn't. He walked over to stand next to her and wrapped an arm around her waist as she was still sat down. "Are people giving you trouble again Betty?" Pop asked, protective over her. "No pop, it's all okay" Betty said with a small smile. "Okay! Can I get you guys anything?" Pop asked the others and all gave him their orders. "And what can I get for you betty?" Pop asked. "Nothing for me thank you, I better be getting home" Betty said, standing up and grabbing her backpack. "I'll see you tomorrow's pop" she smiled. "Bye guys" she said to the others and made her way to the door but before she could leave, Jughead lightly grabbed her arm. "Are you sure you're okay?" He asked, concerned. "Yeah I'm fine" she said. "Why don't you stay for some food?" He smiled but she shook her head. "I'm really tired juggie, I just want to go home" she sighed. "Okay.." he said and she leant up to kiss his lips. "Bye" she said before leaving.

When jughead got back to his trailer that evening his head was spinning. He didn't know why Betty was shutting him out all of a sudden. "You Okay boy?" FP asked when jughead flopped onto the couch next to his dad. "No.." jughead sighed. "Betty's... shes been really closed off today" he started. "We have a parent and teacher conference on Friday and when she found out she ran off and obviously I know why... but why is she shutting me out?" Jug asked. "Well. Imagine being in her shoes. She doesn't have any family, parents and she has to hear everyone talk about how their parents are proud of them at a stupid parent teacher conference" FP said. "She's probably just sad and she's been on her own for so long Jug, that maybe she just doesn't really know how to open up about her feelings because she's not used to it" FP added and jughead was quiet for a moment, thinking about what his dad was saying before he nodded. "You're right" he sighed. "I'll just have to show her how much I care" Jug said. "Why don't you invite her over for breakfast tomorrow before school? Or we can go to pops" FP suggested and jughead nodded. "Yeah that sounds good" he said and text her:

Jug: Hi beautiful. I hope you're okay! How do you feel about breakfast with me and my dad tomorrow at pops? <3

It didn't take long before Betty replied and a grin spread across jugheads face:

Betty: sure that sounds good <3

Jughead smiled as he read over her text. He was hoping that she could open up with him so she wasn't alone anymore.

The next morning, jughead and FP were sat opposite each other in a booth at pops. The bell to the diner rang and Betty walked in, wearing a pretty yellow summer dress. "Hi" she smiled when she walked over to them. "Hey Betty" FP said. "Hey betts" Jug smiled, as he grabbed her hand and pulled her into his side. "You look pretty" he whispered and she blushed. "How are you betty?" FP asked. "I'm okay" Betty said. Just then pop came over to take their orders. "I'll see you after school Betty?" Pop smiled and Betty nodded. "I'll be here" she smiled. "How come?" Jughead asked. "I'm doing a couple of shifts here a week" she told them. "Just to earn a little more money" she added. "Are you struggling with money?" FP asked, concerned. "No, I'm okay" she smiled and jughead knew she didn't really want to talk about it so he changed the subject.

When breakfast was done, and FP left, Betty and jughead walked hand in hand to school. "Thank you" Betty said. "For what?" Jughead asked. "For making me feel welcome" she smiled and he grinned when he realised she knew what he was doing. "I just wanted you to know that you have people who care about you" he said, stopping and wrapping his arms around her waist. "Thank you" she smiled and kissed him softly.
