My second class was Elemental Basics. What happened was we split up into groups based on which tier element we mastered. Gavin was in the second tier, I was in first. But luckily for me, Jake and Lorcan were in first too. I had no one else to talk to, so I walked over to them. They met before I could introduce them, so it worked out. I should mention that the teacher in charge of this class was Mrs. Nightheart, the teacher who ran my test. The classroom was the same as the one I waited in line in.
"Alright! You're all in groups based on your tier. If you're first tier you're either Fire, Water, Plant, or Lightning. If you're in second tier, Shadow or Light. Some of you qualify for both. If that's the case, you've got this class on your schedule twice, and you already been told which one you're in for this class. Third tier is Nether or Ethlos, but that's a separate class. It's quite common for third tiers to double dip and master in a lower tier, usually first. Second tier, you'll be working with Assistant Teacher Ms. Harewell for today. First tier, out of your desks, follow me." Mrs. Nightheart proceeded to float out of her desk. First tier, about thirty of us in all, followed her out into the more wooded area of her classroom.
From there, we covered channelling our magic. That was easy. A little too easy. I completely soaked myself and the ten people standing around me with a sudden explosion of water. Apparently, I sucked all the dew on the grass in a thirty-foot radius towards me and expelled it outwards on accident. Everyone except Lorcan and Jake moved away afterward.
"That was awesome!" Jake said.
"Not really," I said, wringing out my hair.
"Aren't you a fire elemental?" Lorcan asked Jake.
"Yeah, so? I can recognize awesome, even when it can probably kill me."
"Okay then. Carry on."
We were taught the basics of elemental magic. We were also taught the difference between using our element and our element's energy. Our element is just like it is in nature, only manipulated to our will. The energy is the stuff we can't find on our own without magic. It's what the universe is made of when you look at all the energies. Scientists just can't detect it. But you already knew that... probably. Moving on, aside from the water incident as well as a few carnivorous plants growing to full size out of nowhere, class went off without a hitch. Until Jake lit me on fire. Yeah... that was an accident, and while I wasn't hurt too badly, he may have gotten knocked off his feet with a blast of water coming out of my hand. He left me with a few burns and a need to go to the nurse. Lorcan and Jake escorted me themselves.
As I was being carried out, I saw Benedicta teaching. Our eyes met, and she somehow managed to keep her cool while eying us. I'm... not sure what was running through her head, but I'm glad that she didn't cause a panic. Although I later learned she caught Gavin on his way out of the classroom and told him I was hurt. Both of them visited me later. But that's beside the point.
"Rose... I'm sorry."
"I know you didn't mean to hit me. Besides, the skins not black."
"It's still pretty bad. We're carrying you on a stretcher for a reason. Besides, I shouldn't have been messing around with my magic like that."
"It's fine. You got blasted five feet backward. I think you paid your dues. And it doesn't even hurt that badly."
"Not to be a pessimist, but third and fourth-degree burns don't hurt as badly as the other two because they damage the nerves," Lorcan interjected.
We both gave him disturbed looks.
"My dad's a burn specialist."
"A what?" Jake said.
