The Kim's left our house after talking with Mom, mostly. This went on for about two hours. I never understood how adults can talk for so long.
I did manage to learn some things about Doyoung though.
He's actually my age, so we'll be going to the same school come Monday. Mom suggested than we go to the school tomorrow so I can show him around. I don't really want to go. I'll probably end up embarrassing myself somehow. Again.
Oh well.
And I learned that Doyoung can sing. I would think so, especially with his voice. It would be a waste not to use it.
All while we (meaning Mom and Mr and Mrs Na) were talking, I kept stealing glances at Doyoung. Well, more like examining him. How can a human be so attractive, yet so cold? I don't know. But what I do know is that I don't want to have anything to do with him.
As soon as I thought that, he locked eyes with me. My eyes widened, but I didn't look away. I couldn't lose to him. He stared at me for a second, his eyes unblinking, and then did something that completely took me by surprise.
He smiled. It was a full smile that went to his eyes and showed his gums. I stared back at him, confused and then cautiously smiled back. As soon as I smiled, Doyoung's disappeared.
I am so confused.
First he glares at me and I'm all like, "That turd," and then he smiles and I'm like, "Huh, kinda cute. Maybe he ain't so bad after all," and then he leaves me grinning and IT MAKES ME LOOK WEIRD.
Maybe I'm overreacting...
I don't care. Nope.
There's no going back now after what he saw. The memory of me falling on my butt with a giraffe hood on will forever be implanted in his brain. There's no point in trying to regain my ego. That's gone for good. For now on, he'll think of me as the girl who screamed, "Oh my Jesus!" and told her mom to ask her butt if it was alright.
Okay, wow. Now that sounds a lot worse. Oh well.
I avoided looking at Doyoung for the rest of the time him and his family were there. I just minded my own business and stealthily slipped my hand into the bag of shrimp chips that the Kim's brought over and over, until I realized I'd eaten most of them. At least Mom didn't see. I think.
When it was finally time for the Kim's to leave, I jolted up and wiped the crumbs from my face with my sleeve. I saw Doyoung frown. The look on his face was close to disgusted. Who cares, anyway? It's not like I'm trying to impress anyone. He may be kinda hot, but that doesn't come close to making up for his personality. Well, it does make up for some of it. But that's not the point.
We walked them to the door, me keeping my eyes on Doyoung. He must think he's so much above me. Figuratively and literally, too. He really is tall.
Jisung and I stood behind Mom. I had one arm slung over Jisung's shoulder and was practically hanging off of him. Since when did he get so tall?
We waved to the Kim's as they went to the side of the house to the gate that led to their house. Yeah, that's right. They live in the house behind us, not next to. The house is also accessible by the ally. And unfortunately for us, we always get their mail because the mailmen can never find the house.
As soon as the Kim's disappeared through the gate, I ran upstairs.
"Melody, where are you going?" Mom yelled at me.
"Roof!" I shouted back.
"Don't fall!" Jisung screeched.
I would've flipped him off, but Mom was still there.
I looked at myself in my mirror and gasped. I looked hideous. It was even worse than I'd imagined. No wonder Doyoung looked at me like that.
Oh well.
I climbed on my bed and worked at removing the screen from my window. I got if off and was in the middle of climbing through when I remembered my music. I climbed back inside, falling off my bed in the process and searched for my phone. I found it with my earbuds on my desk. I snatched it and climbed back outside, right onto the roof.
I walked along the slanted tiles and got into my favorite part of the roof. I lay down in a little valley created by two slanting parts of the roof. I placed my earbuds in my ears and played my "Roof" playlist. Yes, I made a playlist specifically for my roof.
I sighed and closed my eyes as I heard the first song, "Sun & Rain" by TVXQ. I hummed along until I drifted off into sleep.
I was rudely awoken when I heard someone laughing.
"What the heck?" I muttered, looking around for the culprit. I rubbed my eyes and sat up. There was no one around.
I groaned and lay back down.
Then I heard it again.
"Yeah, I know," Someone said. "I will... Yeah, it's been pretty good so far... Monday... This coming Monday... Okay, see ya... That's too long... Okay then. I miss you... Love you! Bye!"
That voice... I crawled up the roof and peeked over. I gasped and almost slid down the roof. It was him. Doyoung, I mean. He was sitting on the roof of the house behind mine. Oh yeah. That's his house now. I climbed higher to see what he was doing. He was looking at something in his lap.
Wait. What was that expression? Was he...smiling? He looked so much different than when I saw him. How can a person look so relaxed? But there was something else on his face. He looked almost sad. No, that wasn't it. He looked wistful.
Just then, he turned my way. My eyes widened as I lost my balance and somehow managed to trip froward. Doyoung and I screamed in unison.
Luckily for me, I didn't fall with very much force, so I was able to slow myself down.
I sat up and crossed my legs, which were still in my onesies, pretending like I didn't just almost roll off my roof.
"Are you crazy?" Doyoung yelled, his eyebrows furrowed.
I looked at him and smiled.
"Hi."
