It all seemed to happen at once, I mean i spent my high school years stepping in front of all the most popular boys hoping for my glasses to be knocked off and my books thrown across the floor, to help begin a cliche love story for me to tell my children. and now that I had ended up on the floor, I realised that being knocked to the ground by a strong attractive boy was a lot less glam then it seemed. the tall boy extended his hand and helped me to my feet with nothing more than a soft smile.

"th-thanks" was all I managed to choke out, lame? definitely, but it seemed to satisfy the boy as he nodded running his fingers through his blonde hair. There was a brief moment of silence, allowing me to take in the tall boy stood before me. The first thing that struck me was the bright blue of his irises, sure his muscular body had obviously caught my attention, and his adorable smile made me breathless, but it was the blue in his eyes that really caught me. I quickly decided if that blue was the colour of the ocean I definitely wouldn’t mind being lost at sea. Before those eyes could drive me completely insane, I heard a voice that I could’ve sworn belong to an angel pull me out of my thoughts.

"s'no problem, I've never had a girl fall for me as quickly as you did" he laughed to himself, blue eyes lighting up at his own joke. I rolled my eyes but I couldn't help the smile that crept on to my face. as i brushed the dirt off of my jeans something caught the boys eye and a distressed look washed over his face.

"Are you okay? You look like you've seen a ghost." i asked him softly, aware of the fragile state of everyone who ended up at this hotel.

"Yeah, uh yeah... It's just uh, er were you wearing glasses when I knocked you over love?" he asked uncomfortably and gestured towards the shattered pair of glasses on the ground sheepishly. I slowly lifted my hands to my face and surely enough my glasses weren't sat on my nose. A quiet gasp escaped my lips as i realised those were my glasses shattered on the ground, the boy lifted both hands to his face and

started cursing under his breath

"how could you be so fucking stupid luke, you're a true fuck up" he kept repeating this until I finally processed the situation and interrupted the hundreds of degrading

words falling from his lips.

"No, no! Shhhhh, it's okay, it's really okay" I spoke quietly, luke was now on the verge of tears.

"It's really fine! I only need them for reading, watching TV and driving and I have two spare pairs and some contacts. shhh it's alright. you're alright." I whispered pulling him in for a light hug. he held me tight, rubbing my back in small circles. we stayed like this for a while until luke broke away and looked me in the eyes

"Thank you, I really needed that. what's your name love? I really owe you one."  he mumbled pulling his hands into his sweater sleeves.

"Ruby. I mean uh, my names Ruby."

"Alright Ruby, it's been a pleasure knocking you over, but I really think we should check in now, it's freezing out here and we can't risk someone as hot as you freezing." He winked before holding the door open for me and following me into the warm reception.

Although warm, the reception had an unwelcoming icy bite in it. Yeah, I understand it was an old, crusty highway hotel but there was something about this place that was creeping me out, the lights were flickering on and off constantly, and I found myself wondering wether this was some cheap tactic to scare away unwanted customers in the early hours of the morning.

Luke moved towards the front desk cautiously and instinctively I followed. The floorboards began to creak underneath our feet, every footstep causing my heart to beat harder in my chest. Outside, gusts of wind began to blow the dirt up off the ground and across the cars in the parking lot. When I looked back to Luke, His finger was hovering above the bell, staring at me questioningly almost asking for my permission to ring the bell. I gave a light nod and clenched my fists nervously.

One ding, two dings, three dings, four dings, five dings later my patience was beginning to wear thin.

“Luke, shut the fu-”

I was interrupted by the slow creak of a door opening. A short woman in a powder blue robe with a coffee stain across the front, and a tattered pair of slippers shuffled across the uneven floorboards.

“Morning dear, how can I help you on this, uh pleasant morning?” She smiled weakly at Luke, surprisingly not phased at the hour of our arrival. Luke returned the smile, speaking in a calm voice.

“Hi, I’d just like a room thanks. Can’t tell you how long I plan to stay, But anything will do thank you.”

At this, the womans expression softened.

“ Ah, you two are in luck! This is the only room I’ve got left, and it happens to be a deluxe studio, third floor and everything! I’ll get Charles to hang up the No Vacancy sign, this hotel hasn’t seen one of those for years!” The woman carried on rambling and placed the key in the palm of Lukes hand before walking back through the door, still talking to herself.

Luke looked to me and simply shrugged as if we hadn’t been just given a room, TO SHARE. I mean sure, he was attractive but he was an emotional wreck (which is a pathetic excuse because so am I) but before I could put up a fight, Luke had easily picked up both my bag and his own, grabbed my hand and was leading me out the door and back into the cruel, cold winds and up a winding staircase.

Tonight had already been too eventful. I didn’t even know Lukes past, but I knew too well that I had to enjoy the company of the extremely attractive and seemingly empathetic boy who was leading me up the winding flights of stairs while I could. Because in a place like this, our pasts could catch up with us in a heartbeat. And I wasn’t ready for mine to catch me just yet.

Okay, the story is FINALLY getting there! I've just been so busy :(
