THE BEATING RAYS of summer were warm and crisp on Angela Campbell-Watson's face, sprinkling freckles of gold and honey across her features. The Hawkins swimming pool was packed at this time of year, the summer holidays fresh and the weather hot enough that just about every resident was ready for a swim. Angela's group of friends were lucky to arrive early enough to get a lounge chair each, soaking up the sun. The blonde had a book in her hand that was titled 'THE UNTOLD MONSTER MYSTERIES FROM AROUND THE WORLD', and was heavily invested as the sun glinted down on her skin.

Someone placed a hand on the top of her book, pushing it down. "Hey, Angel? Put down the book and admire the eye candy, will you?" Jennifer said, tilting her own head in the direction of Billy Hargrove. Angela pursed her lips and looked at the blonde boy with an unimpressed face. Billy Hargrove. Why did the girls find him so attractive? He was just a douchebag with a mullet.

He was looking off today, Angela noticed. There was sweat beating on his forehead, and he wasn't as alert as he usually was. Once, he'd grabbed her by the arm and threatened to throw her out himself, because she'd been running to her friends alongside the pool. Now, kids were spraying waterguns onto the sunbathing mothers, and he barely batted an eye. "Is something wrong with him?" Angela asked, turning her head to look at her friends. "He looks totally out of it."

"Why are you thinking about that? Look at that chest," Mary lowered her red sunglasses, peering over them to look at his muscles. She took a sip of her Coke through its straw.

"Even the Hawkins Moms can't pull their eyes away," Jennifer drawled, watching Karen Wheeler and the other mothers staring Billy up and down.

"Ew, gross," Angela muttered, placing her book against her chest. "What are they even here for?"

Kimberly looked at Angela like she was an idiot. "Duh, the same reason we are. It's the best view in town." She flicked her heart sunnies over her eyes. Some kids in swimming trunks ran loudly by, giving Angela the time to process how stupid this whole scenario was.
