Dave East.,
"Thanks for the support, bro," I said, snapping a picture with one of my fans. Me and the Locs were at East River Plaza in Footlocker for the meet and greet, and I was hyped to see everyone who came out. Tonight's show was going to be lit. This whole weekend was going to be wild, turning my hometown up while I was back. I was getting ready to head out when two girls came around the corner, realizing they were late. The dark-skinned shorty was bad as hell, and her friend wasn't far behind.
I told my crew to hold up as I walked back over to them.
"Wassup, ladies? Y'all here for the meet and greet?" I asked, flashing a grin.
"Yeah, but we thought you had already left," the light-skinned one said. She looked over at her friend, who was trying to act shy.
"Is that right, little mama?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
The girl lightly shook her head, glancing up at me with a shy smile.
"Aight, bet," I said, thinking on the fly. "Since y'all didn't make it in time for the meet and greet, I got some backstage passes for you. You coming to the concert tonight, right?"
"Yeah, but our seats are whack," the dark-skinned one chimed in, hitting her friend's arm. "I know you can get us better ones."
I chuckled, already feeling the vibe.
"What she meant to say is, my name's Corrine, and this is Jenesis," the dark-skinned girl said, finally speaking up. "We really appreciate the passes. We'll see you at the concert." She smiled, showing a mix of excitement and gratitude.
"Aight, see y'all tonight," I replied with a nod, then turned to head back to the bus, my mind already on what tonight was going to be like.
I couldn't wait to see shorty tonight.
As I got closer to the bus, I could already hear the bass from the soundcheck pumping through the walls. It felt like the whole city was waiting for this night. The energy was different when you're back home — everything hits harder, the love's realer. I threw my bag on the bus, then stepped out onto the sidewalk to catch a breath of that New York air.
"Yo, Dave!" someone shouted from across the street. I looked up and saw one of my old homies waving me down. It was Benny, the dude who used to hold it down in the studio with me before things started taking off.
I smiled and waved him over. "Benny! What's good?"
He jogged up to me, grinning wide. "Man, I been seeing your name everywhere, bro. Proud of you."
"Appreciate it, fam," I said, giving him a handshake. "You still makin' beats?"
"Nah, man. I been stayin' low, but the city's showing love, huh?"
I nodded. "Always. It's just different when you're home. Everything hits different."
Benny laughed and slapped me on the back. "I see you out here with the fans, making moves. But tonight? Man, I already know the show's gonna be legendary."
I smirked. "Ain't no doubt. But it's all about the energy. If they come ready, we're gonna give 'em everything."
He nodded, eyes gleaming with that same hunger I remembered from back in the day. "For sure. I'll see you there, bro. I'll be front row."
"Bet," I said, watching him walk off.
I stepped back onto the bus, the door closing behind me. The whole crew was already inside, getting ready for the night. But my mind kept drifting back to those two girls. Corrine and Jenesis. They had that look—like they knew exactly what they wanted. And I could already tell tonight was gonna be one of those nights where everything just clicks.
"Yo, Dave," one of my boys called from the back. "You ready for tonight?"
I leaned against the wall, nodding. "Always ready. Let's get it."
