lyrics:

you're no good for me
baby, you're no good for me
you're no good for me
but baby, I want you, I want

diet mountain dew
baby, New York City
never was there ever a girl so pretty
do you think we'll be in love forever?
do you think we'll be in love?

diet mountain dew
baby, New York City
can we get it down low, down and gritty
do you think we'll be in love forever?
do you think we'll be in love?

baby, put on heart-shaped sunglasses
'cause we gonna take a ride
I'm not gonna listen to what the past says
I've been waiting up all night

take another a drag, turn me to ashes
ready for another lie?
says he's gonna teach me just what fast is
say it's gonna be alright

let's take Jesus off the dashboard
got enough on his mind
we both know just what we're here for
saved too many times

maybe I like this rollercoaster
maybe it keeps me high
maybe this beat, it brings me closer
I could sparkle up your ride...

baby, stopping at 7eleven
there in his white pontiac heaven
do you think we'll be in love forever?
do you think we'll be in love?

analysis:

background

The song was written back in 2008 in collaboration with Mike Daly who produced the first two demos of the song titled "Diet Mtn Dew" and "Diet Mt. Dew Baby" respectively. Lana uploaded a different cut of the song produced by The Flight to her YouTube channel on June 13th 2011; that was later reworked and produced by friend Emile Haynie in order for it to be cohesive with the record.

Lana created two homemade music videos for the song similar to the style of her other music videos, featuring shots of herself and clips she gathered from miscellaneous films and videos.

my thoughts

Diet Mountain Dew is the fifth track off her debut album Born To Die, and unlike the four songs prior, it is one of the most upbeat songs of the album. It begins immediately with a bopping beat and girly backing vocals singing high the line  "you're no good for me, but baby, I want you" a little mischievously. The song is generally about falling in love with a bad boy not for the long term but simply for the exciting rush of falling in love, and the desire to do something dangerous and out of stereotype in a relationship, even if it's reckless and fast. ("say he's gonna teach me just what fast is, say it's gonna be alright")

Just like the soft drink title, the song is a slow yet upbeat sexy jam loaded with youthful and summer-related pop culture references. In the track Del Rey goes back and forth contemplating her desire to live in this not so good relationship with her lover and society standards.
