As I walk to my car I can't help but smile to myself. Today is the day I begin my freshmen year of college. I know it's not going to be easy but I'm so ready.
As I finish loading my last bag into the trunk of the car I hear my mother calling me from inside. I quickly run up to the front door and yell, "WHAT?"."Goodness, no need to yell."She says with a smile as she comes around the kitchen corner, her blonde curls bouncing with every step.
"Sorry. I thought you were upstairs." I state. "It's okay, I was just going to ask if you have everything you need." Her eyes are glossy and I can tell she's on the verge of tears. "Um, yeah." I say and look at my worn converse.
"I'm so proud of you." She finally says and I look up. Tears are streaming down her cheeks faster than I can count. I step towards her to wrap my arms around my mother. "Mom, I'm not going to be gone forever." I laugh and I can feel her smile.
She pulls back and keeps her hands on my shoulders. "I know but it's going to be different here all alone." She says and smiles. A pang of guilt hits me but I brush it off. "I'll visit every chance I get and call all the time." I say and this only brings more tears. "Mooommm." I whine.
"I'm sorry! I'm sorry, I'm just going to miss you so much." I sigh and check the time. It's 9:07 and I need to get going if I want to get to campus on time. "Text me when you get to your dorm. " she says. I nod and hop into the car.
As I begin to back out of the driveway I stare at my mother standing by the front door of the only home I've ever known.
That's about to change.
