I ran.

It felt bad that I loved someone who was a pirate.

And a criminal.

But he was my lover.

And he was mine.

***

The swirling fog in Louisiana meant I was in a haste. Other seamen chortled; other people who were dressed in their suits and gowns, stared at me, like I was a pirate, too. Dirty, unkempt, and unfit to enter their World.

But love is a strange thing.

And so was Tom.

***

His arms went around my body; his hands covered my breasts. He touched my face with his strong hands; he touched my chest.

He spoke of love...and desire...And of a future together. And of many twinkling stars in the Southern sky, on board the ship; of many more nights of passion in his private chambers...where we celebrated our love without interruptions...

...But that was just a dream.

He was gone.

He was in the cells...

...Or speaking to the Authorities...

...And he was away from me.

And that, in short, was more distressing for me...as I waited for him to return.

***

I saw a sailor being drunk on rum.

"O'er there! O'er there! O'er there! Bogs are crimson, y'aee!". I glared at the sailor. He was rotten; he was tipsy; he was...

..."What're you starin' at?", he asked.

"I was waiting for Captain Tom", answered I.

"He 's in the cells".

"For bein' a Pirate".

"Aye, and you're...".

"Lady Emma".

"Wellllllllll.....M'Laaaaaddddddddddddddddddddyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy, wot're you want frommm...meeee?", he asked.

"You'll crash into the barrels o' rum".

"I...Aye, I sup'ose".

"You a danger to all pirates".

"An' you care abou' me?".

"Aye. Who are you?".

"Mad Billy Cale".

"The mad Billy".

"The one".

"Let's help you to your cabin".

"Fine, M'Laddddyyyyyyyyyyy".

And he dropped down...and snored.

***

Another voice arrived.

"M'Lady, let me help you".

I stared at a sailor.

His short, black hair gleamed in the afternoon sun.

His brown breeches were tight, since he wore a black belt. His black boots shone in the sun. He smiled, as I saw his open white shirt that was unbuttoned.

He was very desirable.

"Forgive me, Sir. The pirate is ill. An' Captain Tom has been arrested on false charges". I shook my head.

"Lady Emma. I am Lord Seamus O'Dougherty".

He spoke in an Irish accent.

"Oh, I've heard you were in London".

"I was. But I live in America since my wife, Lady Greta died in 1815. I took time away to explore the raging seas".

"And no children, M'Lord?".

"Aye, two. Bella, aged 3. And Christian, aged 1. They died of typhoid sickness in our Essex Mansion. The pain was so horrible...that my wife died in 1816 of fever. She was 22. Alas, I strive to better myself in America...and to find love once again".

"Her food was contaminated, M'Lord?".

"Aye, it was like the plague...or scurvy".

"Would you like to come on board once this sailor is in his chamber? I'll have to call Doctor Jameston?".

"Nay, M'Lady. I know him personally. I don't want you to have any kind of illness. I'll inform Rhodes, the Harbor Master, to oversee Captain Tom's ship since it's moored here in Louisiana. Let's see him now...".

"Of course, M'Lord".

And I waited for him to return with the renowned Doctor...as the sky began to darken over our heads...and the threat of the ominous rain was about to create chaos in town.
