Above Ground

Without wasting another second I look behind me. There's nothing there. At least nothing of the human or animal nature.

The laughter almost fails to escape me when I discover it was just a tiny shrub. But it's no time for jokes and laughter. I can't risk being found.

I run half of the way I came. But make a sharp right which causes my balance to tremble. Picking up speed my breathe hitches again. I've never been good at running. In this situation, I don't have an option. I run or I die. I'm suddenly thrust into near darkness.

The sun has disappeared leaving the sky to turn a dull gray. But I continue on.

Before I feel it I know it's coming. Then it happens. Once, twice, thrice. One at a time, then I'm pelted by the sky above. Each drop cascades down my body. Starting from my hair down to my muddy feet.

I don't remember going this far. I don't remember the road bring so far away. Once I get to the road I'm safe.

I'm confident my car still rests where I parked it. There's no way he could just drive away. The rain gets harder as it bounces off my glistening skin. Picking up speed my feet start to slip. Thankfully, I stay above ground, for now at least.
