17 years later...
"No one knows why or how these constellations disappeared, but the earliest it was recorded was relatively 17 years ago." Mrs. Myers, the science teacher, says.
Cynthia Stewart sits in the seat furthest from the teacher, drawing in her notebook.
Landon Stewart sits in the same row, closest to the window. He sits there, asleep for the third time this week.
And it was Tuesday.
"Did anyone notice that Scorpius was gone this summer?" Mrs. Myers asked. Nobody answered. "You kids need to stop looking at your phones," she takes one from a student, who tries to protest, but Mrs. Myers cuts her off, "and start looking up."
Mrs. Myers was a middle aged woman with brown hair that was graying. Her amber eyes looked huge with the square glasses she always wore, and it looked like she hadn't gotten new clothes since she was in high school.
"Landon! Landon Stewart!" She yells, but he doesn't wake up. Mrs. Myers sighs and grabs a text book from her desk. She makes her way to Landon's desk, and slams the book down with all her strength.
Landon jolts awake. Cynthia laughs. "What's going on?" Landon asks groggily.
"You're falling asleep in my class, Mr. Stewart." Mrs. Myers said. "One more time and it'll be a detention. Now, name for me the six constellations we were discussing."
Landon looks at her blankly. "Oh, c'mon, Landon, we've been talking about these our whole life!" Cynthia says.
He shrugs. "I don't listen when you start talking nerd." Landon says to Cynthia.
"Thin ice, Mr. Stewart. You're on thin ice." Mrs. Myers walks back to the front of the room.
Landon rolls his eyes and leans back in his chair.
"You could've gotten in serious trouble. Scratch that, you should've gotten in serious trouble." Cynthia says when they got out of school.
"Relax, sis. Mrs. Myers loves me. She would never give me detention."
"Oh I bet she would." Cynthia says.
"Whatever. I'm going to Max's. I'll be back at 10:00." Landon begins to walk off.
"Uh, I don't think so. I'm going to Avery's. I already asked Dad and he said yes. And anyway, our curfew is 8:00."
"Well, I asked Mom and she said yes. And 8:00 is way too early for a seventeen year old." Landon said.
The two stare at each other. "Why should you get to go out? You fell asleep in class. Again." Cynthia says.
"Mom doesn't know that. We all know Mom's the big dog of the house, and she said I could go." Landon said.
"That's only because she doesn't trust you enough to watch the house and the dog on your own."
"Exactly why you should stay home."
Cynthia rolls her eyes. "I'm the good one. Why should I stay home?"
"The reason that you just said earlier..." Landon said.
"I'm going to Avery's." Cynthia begins to walk down the sidewalk.
"Wait!" Landon calls after her. She stops and turns. "If you let me go, I'll do your chores for a week."
Cynthia frowns. "We don't have any chores."
Landon nods. "I know. I just needed something to distract you for a couple seconds until Max pulled up." He laughs as a car parks next to him and he jumps in.
