I ran my fingers over my sword, making sure it was sharp enough to hurt someone, but not kill.
Chiron would be pissed off if I murdered a camper during Capture the Flag and Mr. D would give me certainly give me another week of extra cleaning duty. I'd just finished this week's punishment.
"Gather around," one of the older campers yelled loudly. "Okay, you've all played before, you all know the rules," she glared at the Ares cabin, "please, follow them."
"Yo, Veronica. Can we use magical items?" Someone shouted out.
The attractive daughter of Athena rolled her eyes. "Yes, Rufus, all magical items are allowed. Luke," she glanced at the tall boy standing next to me, "and I will be captains."
"Why always you two?"
"Rufus, shut up for once," Veronica snapped at the Ares kid. "When you're eighteen, I'll consider you a captain. Until then," she mimed zipping her lips.
"Alright," Luke stepped out from beside me to face the crowd. "Red team will be Hermes, Aphrodite, Dionysus and Ares -"
It was hard to hear him over the chorus of loud complaints.
" - and blue will be Apollo, Demeter, Hephaestus, Athena and Iris." Luke glanced at me as he said my mother's name.
I raised my eyebrows in gratitude. I hated always having to tell people that Iris did actually exist apart from Iris-messaging. Although, who was I to say she existed? I'd never met the woman.
I shook my head of my depressing thoughts and walked over towards where Veronica stood.
Charles Beckandorf handed me a blue helmet, which I strapped on tightly to my head. I wore my own armour, which I'd been given ages ago as a gift from Chiron. It was a few inches too short, which was a shame because I'd hoped that it would fit after puberty.
"Try and not get killed," Luke murmured in my ear as he strapped on his own red helmet.
"If I were you, I'd be giving yourself that advice. Seeing as I'm your competition," I added smugly.
Luke smirked at me, making my heart flutter. "We'll see."
The group I'd sided with was defense, which worked great for me. They were pulling on their armour, descorated with scraps of blue sash and paint. I wrapped a blue ribbon around my wrist and helped a new demigod, a daughter of Apollo, named Lola, tie hers.
"So," a girl from the Hephestus cabin began, "anyone got an awesome plan to avoid being pulverised by Ares?"
With her bright blue hair tied up artistically in two braids and numerous lip piercings, I could recognise Kenzie Smith-Davidson anywhere.
Suddenly, there was a surge of suggestions all at once which made my head throb.
"We could go around the side of the forest and hide the flag near Zeus' fist," Lee suggested.
"The path to the west is always unguarded. Ares won't think to look there," one of his sisters put forward.
"Put the flag down Walter's pants. Trust me, no one is going to look down there!"
