What If I Die?

A worry for me when I thought about surgery was, 'What If I Die?' It's scary to think about.

Especially now, they wanted me to come into the hospital a few days early until the day of my surgery. I've been getting bad headaches which they said would happen because of this thing.

"We'll just go ahead and get you in your room." A nurse told me and my parents, I only nodded. Right now I didn't want to be here, I didn't want to be with my parents. My hands itched to pick up a hockey stick and play till my worries about possibly dying were gone.

I followed the nurse to a room, simple white room with a bed in the middle and stands for IV drips and heart monitors. I didn't want to be here. "We just need you to change into a gown and give us any jewelry you might have." She said handing me a thin gown with a weird pattern.

She moved behind me and opened a door where a private bathroom was. "You can change in here." She told me before walking out. I looked to my parents awkwardly, we had gotten here late, it's about nine now. "Well, dad and I can stay for a bit if you'd like?" My mom said and shook my head, right now I just wanted a bit of alone time.

"No, you should probably go home and make sure grandpa is alright, I'll probably sleep or something.." They nodded, each giving me a hug and a kiss on the head. "You'll be alright Sport," my dad promises before they leave. When I was sure they were gone I went and changed into the gown.

The nurse came back in with a bag and smiled at me. "We need to put your clothes in this and your jewelry in here as well." My thoughts went to the ring Harry bought me. I took off my necklace and earrings but left on my ring. "The ring too." The nurse spoke, pursing her lips. "This doesn't go, it stays until the surgery." I told her and she sighed. "You can't have any jewelry in your possession." She told me, I shrugged and sat on the bed, I slipped on my beanie.

"Oh well." I said and crossed my arms. "I'm getting another nurse." She said, she's making this a big deal. When she was gone I took my phone out and sent a text to Harry, I knew he'd be getting off of work soon and he said he'd stop by. The nurse came back with a familiar man. "Mac hi." I smiled at him, he worked at the school as a nurse sometimes. "Hi Benny." I waved.

"What's going on with the ring?" He asked coming and sitting in the chair by the bed. "Well, my boyfriend bought me this ring, and it means a lot to me and I'd like to keep it as long as I can before the surgery since I have two days before it." I say and he nodded. "I don't think it would be a problem, you can keep the ring on." He patted my shoulder, the nurse huffed and left, Benny only smiled at me before leaving me alone.

I was about to shut my light off and sleep when I saw a familiar head of curls pop in the door. "Harry!" I smiled, he smiled back, he looked tired but came in. "Hey babe." He took off his jacket and climbed in the bed with me. I snuggled into his side. "How was work?" I asked him, he yawned in response. "Tiring, can we sleep?" He asked, I nodded. Pushing the button on my hospital remote and turning the lights off. Harry wrapped me in his arms. "Night Mac." He whispered, pressing a kiss to my forehead. "Night Harry." I kissed his cheek.

We laid there silently for a while, I couldn't sleep. "What's wrong Mac?" Harry asked. I shrugged. "What if I die?" I asked him, his grip tightened on me. "You won't die. The doctors will know what they're doing." He answered. "But what if?" I asked, he sighed, he turned to face me more, his hand rested on my stomach. "You won't. People get these things done a lot and... They survive it, you will too." He spoke softly. "How do you know that?" I asked, my throat hurting from the forming lump, this seriously scares me.

"I know because you are the strongest girl I've ever met.. You've got a strong spirit, a strong heart. Hell, sometimes when I feel like I'm not strong enough I just hang around with you and your strength just radiates. You Make Me Strong." He said, I blinked away any possible tears. "Really?" I say. I hear him chuckle in the dark. "Really. Now, I think we should sleep." He kissed me this time on the lips. "I love you MacKayla." He whispers.

"I love you too Harry."
