When I wake up there is a sharp stabbing sensation in my belly. Ian was already awake, sitting at a table in-between the beds cleaning his gun. I feel moisture between my legs and reach down to feel. When I pull my fingers back up they are coated in bright red blood. I sit up and throw the bedding off of me. There is no blood on the sheets which tells me I haven't been bleeding long. I look at the blood on my fingers and for a moment, then I look past them at Ian who is already on his feet.
"Ana." Ian said. "What's wrong?"
"Shit." I said thinking out loud.
"Why are you bleeding?"
I don't answer. I quickly stand and run from the room. Ian follows close behind me, but I don't care. I'm on a mission to get to the bathroom adjoining my bedroom to clean it up. I sprint up the stairs, down a hallway, and in to my room.
I draw everyone's attention as I run past them. I know some of them follow me as I run but I don't look back at them. When I reach the bathroom I slam the door shut and lock it quickly.
"Ana! What's wrong?!" Ian's voice booms through the door.
He tries to turn the doorknob but it just rattles. Ian pounds on the door.
"Open the door!" He yells.
Confident he's not getting in, I strip quickly and step in the shower. I start feeling tight pulls in my lower belly. Suddenly thick fluid runs from my body. I reach down between my legs as the warm fluid leaks out.
"Go get the doctor!" I shouted through the door.
There is murmuring outside. Then I hear someone shoes click quickly against the hardwood floor. I turn the water on and do my best to wash the blood and fluid away.
"Ana the doctor is on his way. Please, just let us in." Ian begs.
"No! I need the doctor." I begin to cry.
"Open the door Ana!" Sandro said in a concerned tone. "We can't help you if you don't let us in! Please Orsetto, open the door."
There is a pool of blood at my feet mixed with water. I am terrified. I cry as my husband pleads for me to let them in. I shake as I rinse to blood off. There is no comparing this scene to a horror movie, it's worse than anything I've seen in a long time. It looks like a murder scene. Another sharp stab in my abdomen and fluid gushes out as I fall to the floor screaming.
"Ahhh!" I cry on the floor riviting in pain. I place my hands on my stomach covering the place where it hurts. "I need the doctor! Please someone get the doctor!" I cry loudly. "Dante, Help me!"
"ANA, YOU NEED TO OPEN THE DOOR OR I'M GOING TO BREAK IT DOWN!" Vince yells.
"I can't!" I scream with tears streaming down my face. "I can't move! Kick it down! Please god help me!"
Another sharp stab causes me to scream again. Seconds later someone starts kicking at the door trying to break it down, but it doesn't give out. I scream and cry unable to move from the floor of the shower. I plead for someone to be able to to get in and help me but the solid wood door doesn't give.
The pounding on the door continues. I do my best to breathe through the pain. The sound of breaking glass fills the room. I look up to see Aldo and Rosie crawl through the balcony door.
"Mom!" Aldo shouts running to me. "Mom are you okay?"
My son turns the shower off and grabs a towel covering me with it but leaving me where I lie.
"Sandro!" I cry. "I need Sandro."
"Rose open the door!" Aldo commands.
My daughter moves quickly to the door and unlocks it. She opens as the men outside prepare to shoot the lock.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, stop!" She said putting her hands up.
"Rosie, Aldo, how did you get in?" Sandro asks pushing past her and tucking his gun back in the band of his pants.
"I broke the door." Aldo replied gesturing to the broken glass of the balcony door.
"That was a stained glass door that was imported from Italy, Grandpa is going to be pissed." Leo said shaking his head.
"Help me kids." Sandro said. "Wrap the towel around her Rose. Aldo help me pick her up."
"Okay dad." Aldo responds.
Sandro and Aldo grab my arms and slip their hands around my sides lifting me to my feet. Rose wraps the towel around me then Sandro lifts me bridal style and carries me from the bathroom. My husband walks quickly as I cling to him crying. The pain is unreal. I see the trail of blood on the floor as I peek over Sandro's shoulder. He lays me on the bed and moves aside. The doctor moves quickly to examine me.
"Aldo go grab me some flat sheets." The doctor tells him before glancing at my husband. "Ana is having this baby."
Dr. Micheal opens his bag and pulls out a syringe and small brown bottle. He fills the needle full and begins poking it in the skin around my stomach. Slowly the pain lessens.
"This is going to help with the pain. Ana, I need you to stay awake. Do you understand?" He asks.
I nod and mumble out a quiet, "Yes."
Everything happens quickly and I only remember flashes. Aldo returned with the sheets and the doctor covered me. Another man that looks like Dante hurries in behind him.
"How can I help?" The man asks.
"Francis, I need you to help me prep Ana for a c-section." Dr. Micheal speaks to the man quietly and they both leave the room.
My eyes go back to the door to see Dante and Antonio walk in. As cheesy as it may seem, I swear time slowed down as they entered the room. I watched them walk in and then I turned to look at Sandro.
"What the fuck are you doing here?" Sandro asked angrily.
"I'm so happy you came back!" I said over Sandro at the same time.
"You can go fuck yourself. I don't care how pissed at me you are. My daughter called me freaking out. She told me Ana was screaming for help and the door was locked. My family needed me." Dante said coming to my side and taking my hand.
He looked down at me, his tone changes when he speaks to me.
"Of course I came back. I've told you before, if you need me all you have to do is call."
I let go of Sandro's hand and hugged Dante tight. Dante kissed my cheek. I turned my face into his shoulder. Silent tears fell from my eyes.
"I'm so scared Dee. I don't know what's happening." I say crying quietly.
"Shh, I know Cara. It's going to be okay. We are here to help you. I promise you everything will be fine."
I cry as Dante holds me. He shushes me and holds me tightly. I look at Vince over Dante's shoulder. He looks more upset than Sandro. I hold my hand out to him. He takes a few steps toward me and takes my hand, bring it to his lips.
"We need to move Ana to the hospital bed in the sterile room down the hall." Dr. Micheal said coming back in my bedroom.
"I'll take her." Dante said.
"The hell you will." Sandro rebutted. "She's my wife. I'll take her."
Dante and Sandro both stood and faced each other, less than a foot apart.
I rolled my eyes and pulled Vince closer reaching for him to pick me up. I wrapped my arm around his neck and he lifted me quickly. Vince walked around them without a word and we left the room. My brother shook his head and followed close behind with several others.
Ian was in the hall sitting in the chair by the door with his head tipped back on the wall and his eyes closed while he talked to someone on the phone.
"Ian, are you coming?" I said as we walked past.
Instantly he opened his eyes and looked up at me. He jumped out of the chair, following behind us.
"Who are you talking to?" I asked quietly.
"Paul." He whispered.
"Oh? Is he coming?" I asked.
"Yes." Ian said. "Roual, Tommy, and Steven are with him. They are on the way now."
"My dad?" I ask.
"Dad doesn't know your awake Ana." Leo said. "I haven't had a chance to call him yet."
"This has been the most interesting 12 hours of my life in months." Ian said.
"Ana's life is always like this." Vince said. "She always keeps you on your toes."
"Does it still hurt?" Ian asks.
"Yes, but not like it did." I answer.
Vince turned the corner in the sterile room and stopped.
"Can we go in or do we need to change first." Vince asks the doctor.
"We will take her here." Francis said. "There are boxes of scrubs in the bathroom. If you get washed up and change you can come help."
"Ana, Francis is Dante's brother. He will take care of you until we come back." Leo told me as Vince handed me over to him. "I'm going to go stop a fight before Dante and Sandro start throwing fists and kill each other. Vince, Ian stay with my sister."
Francis turned and walked quickly in the room. He laid me on a table that was not comfortable. It was like I was laying on the floor. He pulled the sheet off and put a hospital gown on me. He stopped for a moment looking at a tattoo on my hip.
"What are you looking at?" Dr. Micheal asks.
"This is my family crest." He said running a finger over it. "But it's not. It looks like someone screwed up."
"It's a combination of the five families crests." Ian said walking in and taking my hand.
"What makes you say that?"
"Because I put it there." He says looking Francis in the face. "And I don't screw up."
"It was my idea." Dante said walking in the room with Vince, Sergio, and Antonio.
Sandro, Leo, Paul, Tommy, Roual, and Steven came in a few minutes later. Micheal had done something called a t-dap. The process involved me leaning as far forward as far as I could while hugging a pillow. Then he stuck a giant needle in the base of my spine. They hooked me to several tube, wires and monitors and hung a sheet over the lower portion of my body so I couldn't see where they would make the incision.
"How are you doing Ana?" Michael asked me.
I hadn't realized I had started to hyperventilate.
"I can't, I can't breathe." I choke out as I start to cry.
The room erupted as everyone began talking over each other.
"Ana, calm down. You can breathe. Your having an anxiety attack. Take deep breaths." Francis said.
I couldn't focus. My brain felt scrambled. I couldn't stop my focus that was shifting quickly from one person to the next.
"Calm down Ana." Vince said squeezing my hand.
"Breathe Orsetto." Sandro said.
"Everyone needs to stop talking! Focus on me Ana. Breathe cara." Dante said pushing his way back to me past Sandro and took my hand in his. "Focus on me. It's just me and you."
"Okay." I nod in agreement. I lock my eyes on Dante.
"Breathe and relax. It's just me and you like the first time." Dante said smiling down at me. "Forget everyone else in the room. Breathe in and out."
I stare at Dante and watch him breathe. Eventually matching him breath for breath.
"Good job baby. When Aldo and Rose were born you did the same thing. Do you remember when they were born?"
I shook my head no.
"No one outside my family knew you were pregnant, except for Sergio and Lucia. You were 15. Dr. Dan Capps was monitoring but my mother was the one that delivered the babies. She was your midwife. You'd been living in my father's home on and off for about five months. My mom insisted that a natural water birth was the easiest way. I disagreed but she had convinced you. Antonio called me when you started having contractions, I wasn't even in the same state. I was in the city and you were home. It was a five hour flight to get to you. When I got out of the car I heard you scream for me when I was still outside. I ran in as fast as I could. When I got there my mom had you in the bathtub. Toni was holding your hand, but completely freaking out. His panic, caused you to panic. I was far more scared then you were, of course I didn't want you to know that. It took me twenty minutes to get you calmed down and I had to make Toni leave and calm down before he was allowed to come back. My mom was trying to convince me to get in the tub with you, but my dad was already sitting with you, holding you tight and she was sitting on the edge with her feet in the water. I kept telling her there wasn't space for the whole family in the tub and if that's what she wanted there was a perfectly good pool outside. I got hit for that statement. I held your hand and kept you calm. My parents did the work of delivering our twins. From the first contraction until they were born took 9 hours. By the end of it you were so tired that you fell asleep in my arms while I carried you to my bedroom. My parents carried the babies behind us. I laid you down and we held them both while you fell asleep on my chest.
I remember looking at all of you thinking I had everything I wanted, but it wasn't going to last long. I knew we couldn't be together the way I wanted. But that moment was perfect. The only thing I would have asked for was more moments just like that one.
I stayed with you for the next few weeks. You went to live with Lucia after you left. I didn't get to see you nearly as often as I wanted. When you did come in my dad's house someone else always demanded your attention. That is unless you snuck in through my window after dark. You did that a few times a week for the first year. You'd fall asleep in my arms and leave before I woke up, before anyone realized you were missing.
The sicker your dad seemed to get the more you stayed away. When they'd told you he finally gone it was me that you came to. You locked yourself in your room and climbed out the window. You came to me. I got my perfect moment back that night. You and our toddlers cuddled in to me and we fell asleep together. This time when I woke up you were still there. I took you home and had to pretend I hadn't seen you while you climbed through your window. When I saw that Vince was there, I knew he would have your full attention when you came out."
The shrill sound of a baby crying filled the room.
"It's a boy." Dr. Micheal said handing the baby to a woman I hadn't seen until now.
"Can I hold him?" I ask.
"Yes, after my nurse gets him cleaned and checks him." Micheal said.
A few seconds later a second cry fills the room.
"Another boy." Micheal said. "We are going to get you closed up Ana. When we are done I need you to sleep off the drugs."
"Ann has had enough excitement for the day." Francis agreed
"Who wants the baby?" The nurse asked.
"I do, I want to see him." I said.
The nurse walks slowly swaying as she brings the baby. When she gets to me, she lays the baby on my chest.
"Ana, I want you to try and feed him. Do you remember how?" The nurse asks.
"No. I don't." I answer.
The nurse helps to get the baby latched. Then she takes the second from Micheal. I watch my gorgeous baby eat for several minutes. Then I look at Dante. He smiles softly with his eyes on the baby. A quick look around shows me that everyone is focused on the same thing. Everyone has a smile on their faces. Their expressions are nothing but love.
"What a bunch of girls." I giggle as my eye fill with mist.
The guys chuckle. I continue to watch the baby. The nurse brings the second baby and latches him on the other side.
"She's going to need help holding both babies." The nurse said looking at Vince.
He places one hand shakily on the baby's back. Dante does the same to the other.
"You did so good love." Sandro said before kissing my forehead and looking up to watch the babies.
