Before school started, Nadia decided she'd visit Matt. She hardly ever saw the man anymore now that he and Foggy's little law practice was becoming somewhat successful. Nadia's earbuds were pressed into her ears, the bow and arrow she loved so much was left at home for the night.
She knew how important it was to be careful though, so the gifts from Matt—two wooden sticks—were shoved into some loops she sewed into her pants. Charles thought it looked silly and wondered why Nadia even did it.
Nadia said it was because it was a trend. Charles shut up after that because he's completely clueless about popular trends in fashion.
The oldies playlist she created kept her company as she walked the streets, it was a quiet night. Once she reached Matt's block, she climbed up the fire escape on the back of his building, and Nadia slipped into a window on the lower floor.
The door opened before she even had a chance to knock.
"Don't give me that look, Matt. It's been ages," She heard the smile in her voice. Matt Murdock grumbled about how late it was and how annoying she was. "You know you love me," Nadia jokes, to people on the outside, these two looked like they wouldn't ever end up knowing one another.
Some random guy and a teenage girl seemed off to the public eye but Nadia trusted Matt. One of the last of the good ones. She always thought, he never once acted weird or gave her icky vibes. Matt was safe to her.
"That's a bit generous," Matt refuted, "What's up kid?"
"Come on I hate when you call me kid," Nadia whined–like a child.
Matt laughed, "What's up, annoying teenager I can't get off my back?"
"Ouch! Nothing much, just wanted to stop by, that's all."
Murdock squinted at Nadia, she could guess how much he could see just from watching him all the time. World on fire. He had said one day after she asked, it confused her. "You're lying to me, I can tell, spit it out."
Nadia flopped onto his couch, she winced in pain, "Christ this thing sucks." She sighed and dropped her bag on the floor. "Since you're so interested–" Matt cringed but she cut him off, "–I'm going to public school next week."
The sound of his laugh definitely solidified Nadia's reaction to her accepting it.
"You? At public school, now that's something I'd like to see."
"You can't even see man!"
Matt pushed her feet off the couch, "Yea yea, whatever." He sat down and Nadia saw how he tried to play off the discomfortability. "So, school, huh?" He asked after a minute.
Nadia sat up and leaned back, letting her legs dangle. "Yup," She popped the 'p' loudly. "Wonder how quickly I'll drop out?" She joked.
"I'd say a week." She snorted at him. "I'm being realistic,"
Nadia let the silence envelope the two of them, genuinely thinking about how long she'd realistically stay in school. It was hard to consider it, she hasn't been in school for over five years. Graduating at ten may not be the norm, but it's all she knows. "If the kids don't suck, I think it'll be alright, I don't even have to take a math class, how sick is that?"
"What? How the hell you'd get out of that?"
She laughed, "My dad actually got me out of it, I'm doing an internship at Avengers Tower to make up for the missing credits."
"Huh," Matt nodded, "This will be good for you, maybe you'll find some real friends." He chuckled at himself.
"You're a real friend, Matty pie," She makes her voice sound all childlike and puts a stupid grin on her face.
Matt pushed her face away from him, "You're insufferable." Nadia swatted his hands away from her. "You staying the night or what? I can order some pizza."
"Leo's?" He nodded, "I can order it." She offered and he huffed, "I only have ten bucks, you got anything else?"
Matt goes to his room and drops a twenty on the table, "Get the usual, I'll find a movie."
Things with Matt were always that easy. They never went too deep and always kept things on the surface. Matt wasn't lonely or anything—if anyone was lonely it'd be Nadia—but he wasn't completely irritated by her presence.
She liked hanging around him, one other person who wasn't her dad. Nadia loved her dad so much but sometimes one person is too much after a while. "You know I think I might actually like knowing more people than you and my dad," She nodded to herself, "I think I really will."
