CHAPTER 6

BEACH PARTIES AND UNLIKELY STOWAWAYS

Aurora lunged forward and used her clasped hands to hit the ball right before it hit the ground, causing her to land with her arms stretched out and a mouthful of sand. Luckily for her, Raine’s reflexes were sharp and she managed to spike the ball over the net, scoring a point for their team.

Spitting out the particles of sand, Aurora rose to her feet and took on her stance as she send a grin towards her friend. They had just recently discovered the wonders of the game and they wanted to have fun while they could.

“Not bad, padiras,” Artemesio called from the opposing side. “You’re doing pretty good for your first game,”

“Don’t forget they’re behind by twelve points,” Neil snickered.

“We’re on the same team, you idiot,” Raine pointed out, huffing as she set her eyes on Arty, Jed and Erik.

“Nah, I disowned you both ages ago when I realized losing was inevitable.” He replied, dusting his bare shoulder.

“I knew you’d accept defeat easily,” Arty grinned. “Your history of losing to me could give you that mentality.”

Neil glared at him before taking up his stance as well. “That’s it, monkey boy.” He growled. “Bring it.”

Aurora had to admit that the game had become pretty intense now that Neil actually wanted to win. She was also surprised by Erik’s performance in the game that her competitive side reared its ugly head too. The elf boy was amazing!

Whenever the ball reached to high over the net, he would simply run up either Jed or Arty’s back and spike it over or they would toss him into the air and he would hit it with either a spinning kick or backflip kick just to mock them.

And they think I’m a show off, she thought.

The game ended a few minutes later with both teams panting and sweating. Obviously Arty’s team won but Aurora was happy to note that her team had only been defeated by three points.

It was a start.

She tried to brush as much sand from her body as she walked over to where she had dumped her boots. Neil and Arty were lashing out at each other while Raine sneakily went to ask Jed about the specifics of the game.

No doubt she was going to try to find out some kind of loophole in the rules and use it to her advantage.

That left her and Erik and he looked all too pleased with himself as he wildly shook his head to rid himself of the sand.

“You are one heck of a player, kid,” she told him. “And here I thought you were just a cabin boy,”

He beamed at her. “I love playing all the time we make port. It’s one of the few things I’m really good at.”

“How’d you learn to play like that?”

“Oh, Callie’s a real show off so I got some of my moves from her.” He replied. “But ‘cause I’m way smaller, the guys can throw me up and I can do all those cool moves. And I’m an awesome elf.”

Aurora chuckled and dusted off her feet before slipping o her boots. The feeling of sand between her toes was annoyingly still there but she ignored it and turned back to Erik. Before she could speak, she heard the sound of drums and excited murmuring. Only then did she notice that the sun had set and people were moving towards a bonfire.

“You will never guess what’s just happening,” Raine said, appearing beside her.

Aurora gave her a look. “And that is…?”
