Beep! Beep! Beep! "Ugh!" I slapped the alarm clock until it finally turned off. I sat up and stretched out. Scratching my head I walked to the bathroom to get ready for the day. I looked at myself in the mirror and sighed. A little back story, my name is Violet and I am a junior at Moore College of Art and Design in Arizona. I am 22 and live with my parents because I am unable to afford an apartment yet. I have a best friend named Katie who is also 22 but I am older by a month. We both met in first grade and stuck together like glue ever since. My family has issues both with themselves and with me, and being the only child, I get the full blow. They don't physically hurt me but they do verbally abuse me. The only friends I have are Katie, Landon, and Martin. Landon and Martin are both in a relationship and Katie and I met them at freshman orientation. We stuck with them ever since that day. Katie was openly bi, while I was the only lesbian in the group. Now back to current time, I was standing in front of the mirror looking at the dark circles under my eyes.
I looked tired but it was just more of an emotionally tired. Sighing, I took my anti-depressant pills and walked out of the bathroom. I was greeted with the sight of my parents drinking on the couch. "Oh look mood is ruined." I didn't respond, instead, I rolled my eyes, grabbed myself a banana, and went back to my room to get dressed and grab my stuff. A little later I had gotten a text that Katie was outside waiting for me in her car. I quickly texted back saying that I was coming. On the way out I didn't glance or say anything to my parents, and they didn't care. I simply huffed and went out the door. My mood immediately improved when I saw Katie waving at me through the car window. I smiled at her and jogged to her car. "Hey Vi, ready for school?" I put my bag on the floor and shrugged. I leaned back in the seat and looked over at her, "Are you?" She shrugged as well in response. I didn't really want to go to school but it beats then having to stay with my parents. Once she parked I said to her, "You don't have to drive me home today, I have got some things to do after school." I nudged her and she smiled. Gosh that smile. Wait what? I reached for the double doors and held it open for us. She said thank you and walked in. We were both immediately greeted by Carson and Charles. I didn't like either one of them, they tend to have one-night stands and are rude to basically any other person they are not wanting to get into their pants. Carson has been trying to get Katie since last year and she has refused everytime but he still tries.
"Hey Katie looking good today," Carson says and breaks our good mood. I look over at Katie who rolls her eyes and sighs. Charles seems uninterested because he was currently staring at someone who was behind me. I was hoping Carson would do the same but was disappointed when he spoke up again. "Aw, baby why won't you respond to me? Is it because you are intimidated by me?" He said with a smirk on his face and started to get closer to Katie which made her get closer to me and discreetly hold my hand. She intertwines our fingers and squeezes when he is right in front of her face. I can never get over how soft her hand is. No stop it Violet, save Katie. I was quick to pull her behind me when Carson leaned in to kiss her. He stumbled forward a bit and Katie held my hand tighter leaning into my back. Carson looked pissed and stood back up looking at me, "Why did you interfere? Couldn't you see she was enjoying that." He looked over my shoulder at Katie and I felt her tense up. I rubbed her hand with my thumb to calm her down a bit which worked as I felt her relax a little. Taking a step forward, I put my unoccupied hand on his chest pushing him back. At this point, Charles had looked over to what was happening. "Woah there Violet no need to be physical." He stepped a bit closer to me and said lowly, "Unless you want to. I can show you what a real man can do." I scoffed and leaned closer to him whispering into his ear, "You are no man. You're more like a puppy with training wheels. And for the offer, I can bet a girl can do ten times better."
With that said, I leaned back and smirked at him. He seemed shocked and angry but quickly recovered and backed up. Speaking up I said, "Now back off neither of us are interested." I quickly pulled Katie away before they could say anything back. Once we were far enough I quietly let out a breath of air. That air was sucked away again when Katie appeared in front of me pulling me into a tight hug. She quietly whispered in my ear, "Thank you Vi." Before I could snap out of my daze and hug her back, she pulled away and lightly kissed my cheek. A face-eating grin took over but I had somehow managed to not blush, "You know I will always protect you." She smiled and nodded. We both were looking at each other until someone put their hand on my shoulder. "Hey guys what's up." I jumped slightly and looked over at Martin. Katie was the first to speak, "Hey Mar where's Don?" He seemed to perk up at his boyfriend's name, "He's coming over now, he went to the bathroom." Katie smiled at nodded. We all looked down the hallway when we heard our names being called. I smiled and ran to him making it like one of those dramatic movies. I started laughing when he played along and when we got closer to each other I jumped and Landon caught me spinning me around.
