Chapter 20 – Chris
Pushing myself from the wall, I head to the bathroom, wash my face and take few calming breaths, looking at the man in the mirror and not recognizing myself. It wasn’t that I had changed physically; instead it was I had removed the rose-colored glasses that helped me ignore the outside world despite working in a hospital.
Had I been so blinded that I didn’t seek out my mate? I failed Rainy as well, Nancy, not someone he had very much contact with followed him out of our pack, yet I remained? Even trying to ease my guilt and stupidity by saying that it was because she had a child and couldn’t be in a pack that handled a missing child in that manner.
Also, to the extent that my children were abused is not something I’ve had much experience with in my own hospital… pushing off the sink I head to the hall way, bouncing into a disheveled Logan.
Meeting my eyes, he stands still, “I – thank you. I know it’s not enough, I’m just – sorry,” said imploringly.
“I need to ask you for something however,” I rushed to say, knowing he might not understand, but I just, couldn’t – “Actually, I need to speak to you and Rainy both,” he interrupted, his figure tense and I could only cringe when I thought of what else couldn’t possibly go wrong here.
Nodding quickly, I stepped aside and followed him into the room, moving as slowly as I once had, heading to speak to Rainy, except I stopped at Michelle’s crib as she whined and I noticed that Rainy had Nicole in her arms once again. Cautiously, I walked to the side, “Hi sweetheart,” I cooed, stretching my arms slowly to reach out to her, less worried and afraid watching for signs that she didn’t want to be touched by me. Instantly the whining stopped, her eyes widened, “you remember be don’t you? It’s okay,” I continued speaking. Placing my hands underneath her, lifting her carefully and placing her against my body as she whimpered. Slowly I turned, facing Logan who was watching me with narrow eyes, cutting to Rainy; his ire disappeared when he took in the smile she had on. He hated me, rightfully so… but, for Rainy, he would put that aside, and I could deal with that.
“That was such a short nap sweetheart,” I said looking at Michelle; lifting my head I realized they were all awake, sans Kayla.
Rainy shuffled, and I was starting to learn her again, pick up on her tells; right now? She had something to say but was embarrassed too, “What is it Rainy? Did I say something wrong?” I said trying to shoulder the blame, even though I was fairly sure this was something about her time locked up.
She shook her head, “They aren’t allowed to sleep for long periods of time… after two hours he’d wake-”
“Sleep deprivation” Logan gritted his teeth, growling, his eyes immediately turned black and Rainy stepped backwards, alarm, as Michelle twisted her head to see who was making such a startling noise, her little chin wobbling. Rocking her awkwardly, I stepped closer to Rainy, but not touching, “it’s okay,” I murmured to them both, side glancing at Logan who was crestfallen.
I started humming, calming Michelle, Rainy and Nicole easily, turning over my shoulder, I find Sarahs eyes, and she glances up at me shyly, “Sarahbear, have you met your Uncle Logan, he found you all,” I say honestly, titling my head in Logans direction, but ashamed that I can’t say I helped; dread building, knowing that they’d question why I never came looking. She’s glances over and Logan, I do as well, he smiles warmly at her but she doesn’t return it.
Turning to face Rainy and I, Logan waves to the sofa, the small smile gone, “What was the emergency?” Rainy asked, glancing between Nicole and Logan.
“Another Alpha, his mate has been kidnapped…” he says slowly watching Rainy, scrutinizing her reaction. She doesn’t look up but nods, “He’s following another lead right now, keeping me informed but asked me to look into someone named Jax-” Rainy gasped, her head snapped up, eyes wide looking at Logan.
“Rainy… are you-” Logan went to put a hand on her thigh but before his hand got within two feet of rainy she flinched and his hand just fell.
She cocked her head to the side, “Jax isn’t a person Bubba, it’s a group, or company I think, but not a person.” She scrunched her eyes, then squinting one, she eyed Logan.
“Are – are you sure it’s not a person?”
Her face paled, she closed her eyes, as her head dropped shaking it back and forth, and I looked to Logan who seemed just as baffled as I was.
With a voice eerily calm and gritty, nothing like hers at all, she spoke, “Nice pickings you’ve got yourself here Seth, don’t let them folks at Jax hear about this.”
