Kaia's couldn't control the uncontrollable coughing that shook her body, her throat on fire as it expelled water back up from her stomach. The air painfully made its way back into her lungs, causing her to gasp and sputter, the taste of water bitter and unpleasant in her mouth. She was helpless in the face of her own body's reaction, completely powerless to control the chaos that had engulfed her.
Regulus kneeled beside Kaia, his own clothes soaked from their recent ordeal. As he patted her back and helped to keep her steady, he spoke with a mix of concern and irritation.
"I've known plenty of foolish people," he mused, "but you, Kaia McKinnon, are the biggest of them all."
As her breathing slowed and she took in their surroundings, a look of realization crossed her face. "The locket—" she managed to say between breaths.
"Kreacher got it," Regulus assured her, "and he's hiding it safely for us."
But his expression darkened as he continued, his eyes boring into hers. "I can't believe you did that, Kaia. Why did you stun me?"
Kaia responded faintly, her voice strained. "I couldn't let you do it," she explained, her expression determined even in her weakened state. "I don't think you would've been able to handle that awful experience."
