A large crowd had gathered around us outside of Jerusalem. Someone had spread a rumor that I was to give a talk when my only intention was to sit with a few friends and meditate for a while on top of the hillside.

James poked my back with his finger. "Rabbi. Brother, a rather large crowd has gathered just below us. I believe they intend to hear you speak."

I looked up at James; he was pointing behind me. I had been sitting in front of a small rock outcropping and climbed up on top of the rocks to look out at the warm desert and the crowd. All were sitting in relative silence.

"What is it you wish to know, my friends?" I asked of the crowd. Speech messengers began to relay my question through the crowd.

An older man only fifteen yards away stood up and shouted up to me. "Rabbi Jeshua, I have heard you speak of experiencing peace by communicating with God. I find this very difficult. I am constantly in fear of what the Romans might do to me and my family. I see injustice and pain all around me. What is an old man to do?" There was pain behind those last words.

"My brother, your mind and the mind of anyone who makes this world seem real is like a scared donkey—braying and kicking all day long, afraid of any shadow that comes near it. When you pause, take a breath, and let the Holy Spirit in as your caretaker, the seas become calm, the rocky trail smoothed, and the load on your back lifted."

I paused to let my words travel to the back of the crowd. I saw some head nodding mixed with head scratching.

The old man remained standing. "Forgive me, Rabbi, but you speak in riddles to an old man. What does this have to do with living in fear of the Romans?"

"My brother, what appear to be demons, evil, and wrongdoers are simply minds that have split into thousands of pieces and are looking for a way back to love. That is how you must see all of your brothers—as spirit who has lost their way but are on their own path back to God."

"So love the Romans as a neighbor?" The man moved his hand above his head to block the sun.

"Yes, and above all, love God,our Father, with all of your heart, mind, and will. God is."
