The police arrived about 8 minutes after the van wheeled away with Rae. I didn't move from where I fell on the concrete. I can sense everyone looking down at me. A kind female cop put a grey blanket over my shoulders and other police went into the crowd to start questioning people. I couldn't move; I felt broken inside and out.
Right away, three police cars screeched away in the direction the van had, some of the faceless people in the crowd directed them, with what sounded like a vague description of the vehicle and passengers.
After an hour or two- I'm not sure, I finally started talking to the police and after telling them all I knew and my bit at what happened; I vomited on the curb.
As people were waiting for their turn to be questioned, a lot of the patient people cleaned for me and had done most of it. Hours later, just as the sun started coming up, the cops were done and allowing people to go home.
I walked inside, the golden morning light taunting and forcing time forwards, away from where I last saw Rae. I walked in the door. Auna and Alec were still here. "You guys can go now..." I said after glancing up at them.
"No, we're your friends. We'll stay here with you for a little while at least." They stated.
"I would like to be alone..." I maintained.
"We'll at least stay down here. You should go to bed." Auna and Alec hooked their arms around me and led me to the stairs. They were too calm. They are seeming more calm for me. I see it in their side glances; they're as scared as I am, but hide it for me. I appreciate that...
But I really didn't want to go up to our bed without her... They won't give me much choice, though it seems. I lay down and am surprisingly happy with the unconsciousness flowing over me. Letting my mind turn off and stop replaying the way Rae's eyes bulge out at me as she cried out my name; pleading me to help her, and I couldn't save her. The way her expression changed just before the door was closed between us as she started saying "I love you" In such a hopeless way, as though she was saying goodbye... And they slammed the door in her face before she could even finish and let me tell her I love her one last time... I will find her.
