Catching Us

The soft sweet melody felt so heavenly early in the morning. Just like every other day, Mellicent woke up listening to her mother's favourait tune. She sat up and turned the alarm off. She wondered how this simple tune made her smile everyday forgetting the annoying feeling of getting up early.

Today she was up too early than she normally does. She got out of her bed & quickly changed into a pair of sweatpant & a hoodie jacket. She grabbed the flat wooden box that she huggs like a teddy every night during sleep & went out of the house.

It was in the woods behind her house. It was a really beautiful view. The clear water of the lake & light morning fog created a wonderful, rare & calming view. She sat on her usual spot near the lake, on the wet grass. She slowly brushed her finger on the flat wooden box. It almost looked like a chopping board. But was a bit thicker.

She smiled & clutched the necklace she wore in her her hans. It was a simple oval shaped locket with beautiful patterns on the top of it. Pulling it out, she stared at it for a moment. It was her mother's. her father gifted it to her mother on her 30th birhday. After letting out a shaky breath, she finally opened the locket. It revealed a picture of her mother & another of her father. She remembered the day her mother gave it to her.

She told her "Wear it always sweetie. It will make you feel I'm right there with you, always. Even if I'm not."

Though it was very hard for a 7 years old to understad then whats going on, but she did anyway. She understood cancer was nothing but the name of a horrible monster which was taking her mom away. Forever. When her mother gave her the necklace, it had a pictures of her mother & her own with her two elder siblings. But she took out the group photo with her siblings ritght after her father's death & placed one of her father's.

She trailed her fingers over their pictures. A small drop of tear silently rolled down her cheeks. No, she wasn't sad. Not anymore. She got up & walked towards the tent like small house. She & her father together made it years ago. It was like a small play house. But now this was the only place for her to save her memories.

She sat there for a moment. Today was the last day of her carefree life. Tomorrow is a big day. Tomorrow she's gonna get everything she ever wanted. Everything her parents ever wanted for her. Its her time now. She will never look back now.
