the war had left tommy feeling tired, and all the boy wanted was to go home and get some well deserved sleep. tommy had trudged onto a train, sitting across from alex. the other boy had been through ups and downs with tommy; and tommy had decided that he was fond of alex. the day had been long, hopping from sinking ship to sinking ship, just trying to survive. tommy had tried to wipe the black oil off his face, but some of it still remained, only adding to his tired look. his hair had become moppy, and was dry, like most hair is after being in salty water.
going home, for tommy, almost seemed impossible-- as if the whole train was a joke. the brunette had tried and failed to fall asleep. his bag was pressed between his head and the window, working as a makeshift pillow. but, just as you can't fall asleep on the window of a school bus without it bumping over so many rocks you feel like you have a brain injury, the train shook tommy's head, leading the boy to being unable to sleep. it was around then that the girl walked by his seat. tommy wasn't paying attention at first, but then he smelled something amazing. at first, he thought it was the food on the cart she pushed, but he soon realized it was her perfume. this led him to look at her more closely. her hair was up in a bun, and it seemed as if it had been neatly put together long before, but now small wisps of hair traced along her ears and neck. her skin looked soft to the touch, and her smile was radiant. she wore a black dress with an apron, but she was still able to look good in it. tommy was in awe, sitting up a bit taller and hastily running his hands through his hair to make it more presentable.
"would you like anything, sir?" at the sound of a soft voice, tommy looked up. the girl was looking at him with soft eyes and a smile. tommy's brows furrowed in confusion before he remembered the cart before her. he sat up, leaning over to see what foods she had. tommy's eyes rested on a baguette, and he pointed at it wordlessly. the girl nodded, handing him one of them.
"tommy." the boy muttered. the girl before him looked at him, confused. "my name. my name is tommy."
she flashed another radiant smile, tucking a stray piece of hair behind her ear. "y/n." she muttered. "nice to meet you, tommy." tommy was desperate to keep the girl in his sight, desperate for a conversation. lucky for him, she started one before he had to. "where are you headed, tommy?"
"england." tommy respnded almost too quickly. "i'm headed towards england." he smiled sheepishly, trying not to hide behind his hair.
"i figured, with the accent and all." tommy nodded, looking up at her. "that's a long way," y/n commented, "are you taking the train all the way to england?"
tommy didn't know how to respond to this, because he had planned to take the train, but didn't know what her offer was. "uh, yeah, they didn't give us soldiers any other options. so, yeah, i'm taking the train the whole way."
"this train won't take you too far. if you'd like, you can stay at my house for a night or so. you seemed to be having sturggle sleeping on the train, which is understandable." tommy didn't know how to react to her words, because this beautiful girl had just invited him to spend the night with her. all tommy could do was nod and bite into his baguette. "okay, i'll come back here to get you later, okay?"
------
tommy was more than hapy to be back inside a house, and to get to sleep in a real bed. lucky for him, y/n had a guest bedroom that she was letting tommy use for the night. the girl had gotten some blankets and some of her fathers' pajamas, setting them all on the bed. tommy changed, brushing his teeth and then climbing into the bed.
y/n had shown up enventually, wearing a nightgown with her hair down. "why me?" tommy asked when she sat on the edge of the bed. "of all the soldiers you could have given a place for the night, why me?"
the girl sighed slightly, moving closer to where tommy lay. "because i like you, tommy." and with that, she pressed a gentle kiss to his cheek, walking away, leaving the poor boy starstruck.
