School bells
Most people hate the sound of them but for us, for the unpopular-popular kids, they were sounds of freedom. Today, a chilly Friday morning, I had tied my long brown hair into a messy bun, a long red scarf drapped around my neck. I walked next to my almost sisters, Danielle and Anna, while my never brothers, Alexander and Caleb, stumbled behind.
Alexander leaned beside me and wrapped a long, skinny, arm around my waist and asked loudly, "What's going on today?" He pinched my side and I shrieked loudly, pushing away from him. "Hey!" Danielle shouted as Alexander chased after her next as we steadily kept at a pace across the cold ground.
Caleb came beside me next watching as our two friends chased each other, poking and tickling. I laughed at his smile and asked, "Your happy today... happier than usual." He peered down at me through his thick black glasses and smiled, "Yeah, I guess."
We hadn't had the best of lives, Caleb mostly. Danielle had an insane life with her two brothers, her sister, and her parents moving around from house to house. Alex, well he seemed to let everything slide, having a smile on his face made me think everything was good in his life. His blonde hair cut extremely short just added to his happiness.
Anna could be dead serious if she wanted but usually made a face at things she hated. Life with her was good, her short brown hair made her short length seem taller next to us. I had an okay life, dreams of traveling around the world. Me being adopted didn't help that in any way. Trying to get away from my family was harder than it sounded. Being an A+ student didn't mean a lot in my family seeing that my older sister got the best of the family.
Then we come to Caleb. He'd only been with us for about a month and 1/2, but he had managed to find a way into our group. He was smart, a writer, and smiled like a fool at everything. But beneath the idiot on the outside, he was more confusing than us. His best friend had committed suicide, his grandparents disowned him when he confessed to being bi, he cut himself in the past and even tried suicide himself yet he had taken refuge with us. Most nights with him where spent trying to convince him that he was more than nothing, luckily I was always the one to be there. He had short, black, hair that curled up at the ends, his black glasses always perched firmly on his nose.
"Hey." He said and pinched my side. I slapped his hand and whispered, "Stop it!" He laughed and put his hands on my shoulders. "Cami, we are so cool." I smiled and Anna looked at me and raised her eyebrows. Bumping into her purposely I growled, "Shut up."
"Did you guys finish the math homework?" Anna asks, shouldering her backpack. We both look to her who forms her mouth into an O shape. "You finished last week didn't you?" She asks looking at her feet. I smile and nod, glancing behind me to see Danielle and Alexander trailing behind us, Alex taking her large backpack.
"Oi! Idiots come on!" I shouted and waved to them to hurry up. The stomped beside us as we came to the small areas where our classrooms were located. Alexander ran off to his home-room while we stayed in one group on our way to the far right portable for our first class with Miss. Carpenter.
Taking my seat, I flopped my book infront of me and began to read while the teacher went over the day's lessons. I hardly listen, already knowing what she is saying and instead think to last nights texting frenzy with Caleb.
Most night we would talk about random things, school, friends, food, just life. We would talk and laugh back and forth... the emojis trying to tell what we really felt. But some nights weren't always the best. For many were filled with me trying to convince Caleb that life was something better that evrything was going to be fine. He called me perfect because he thought I was... but the truth is those texts were also for myself. I was trying to tell myself that life was going to get better and that I was going to be happier. And it worked.
Sometimes.
